Meet the Newest General Who Took a Rival to the Super Bowl

Get to know Jon DeMarco, the new head coach of the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School Generals girls' basketball team.

Occupation: Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School girls basketball coach and high school history teacher at Revere High School.

Tell us a little about this year's team: We have a great group of girls that have worked extremely hard the first two weeks of practice. We are looking forward to the season, but understand nothing is going to come easy.

What hopes do you have for them? I hope that every player makes the most of their high school basketball experience. Being part of a high school team is a special opportunity that should not be taken for granted.

Hobbies/interests: I enjoy anything to do with sports or history.

Favorite Food: Crab Rangoon

What are you passionate about? Coaching, since I am a competitor. I also enjoy working with student-athletes and watching them grow as players and people.

What did you study in school? History and education

Are you utilizing this subject now? Yes, everyday as a teacher.

You forget your cell phone at home....are you stressed? or relieved? Stressed, since I can’t check my Gmail account to keep up with all the basketball emails.

Dream vacation: Somewhere on a beach with warm weather

Favorite tradition? Any of the holidays with family

Who is your favorite local resident? Jonathan Mitchell, since he is my boss at RHS

What brings you peace? Spending time with family

What is the coolest thing you have ever done? Coaching Lynnfield High in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium this year.

Where is your favorite place on earth? Lake Winnipesaukee

Favorite Quote? This quote was taken from a Teddy Roosevelt speech in 1910. “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. What do you wish you had done in your 20s but didn’t? I’m still in my 20s and am happy with my accomplishments.  

How long have you lived in Hamilton-Wenham? First year as a coach at HWRHS.

Why did you choose Hamilton-Wenham? I was fortunate enough that Hamilton-Wenham chose me.

What is your favorite place in Hamilton-Wenham?  Basketball gym

What is a fact about you that most don’t know?  I didn’t play football until college and then became a starting wide receiver. Most people think I played in high school too.

Do you have an unusual or funny story having to do with Hamilton-Wenham?  I always considered Hamilton-Wenham a rival since I am a football coach in Lynnfield. Ironically, now I consider Lynnfield a rival in basketball.  Funny how things work out sometimes.

Where would someone see you around town? At the high school coaching a game. Come support the team!
