Freshmen Sports to Return to the Regional This Fall

Freshman soccer teams will again be part of the athletic program this fall at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School.

Freshman sports are expected to return to Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School this fall after a six-year hiatus. The inclusion of freshmen teams in the athletic program didn’t end because of budget cuts six years ago – there just wasn’t enough field space at the time. This year, the added programs won’t cost any more money because sports are funded entirely through user fees. The plan became reality after a “extremely productive meeting” of the Recreation board and others last Monday. “We brought all the interested parties to the table, rolled up our sleeves and worked it out,” said School Committee member Dacia Rubel, later adding: “We look forward to freshman sports again in the district.” The desire to add freshman sports was one of …

Under the previous regime, the super would just cut, cut, cut programs and the SC chair would blindly go along, completing ignoring parents and students. They never had to go back and tell their own kids that they had just cut freshman soccer or French or AP …   more ›

Students: Why Did You Choose an Interim High School Principal?

Two high school juniors question the acting superintendent last week about why an interim principal was chosen over the two finalists for the high school principal job.

Two high school juniors questioned school leaders last week about why finalists for the high school principal job were bypassed in favor of opening a search for a one-year interim principal for Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School. Ian Thompson and Allison Manzelli said they were curious about the decision. “The whole student body is,” Thompson said. The pair said the transition from one principal to another is not fair for students and teachers. They had hoped that a permanent choice was made to start the upcoming school year. The interim principal will be their third principal in their high school career, they said. Hours before the School Committee meeting where Thompson and Manzelli delivered their questioning, Acting Superintendent …

Dear Peter Gray, I cannot believe you are initiating yet another candidate search for principal when you had TWO perfectly wonderful applicants, who were supported by the community, at your disposal. Do you not have enough on your plate with an empty superintendent slot and an elementary principal position to fill as well? Do you have all the time in the world? Our students do not!! I am angry …   more ›
