Wenham Voters Approve War Memorial, Reject Pay Raise Funding

Wenham voters approved the design for a new war memorial design and gave the Board of Selectmen the authority to sign a lease for the Iron Rail soccer field at Tuesday night's Special Town Meeting.

Wenham voters approved the design for a proposed war memorial and rejected a move that would have given Selectmen $18,000 to go toward pay raises for non-union employees at Tuesday night’s Town Meeting. The closest vote at the 95-minute long meeting at Buker Elementary School was to approve the design for the war memorial on the car barn lot at Arbor and Main streets. The design was approved 106-57. None of the other Town Meeting votes required a card count. War Memorial Design Approved Article 7 asked voters to approve a memorial design that had already been given the OK by the Town Hall and Police Station Building Committee, Historic District Commission, War Memorial Committee and Board of Selectmen. Top Five Local Stories Last Week

A look back at the past week in news in Hamilton and Wenham.

Here's a look back at the top five stories in the past week in Hamilton and Wenham. Special Town Meeting in Hamilton Averted: The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School Committee endorsed a $500,000 so-called “giveback” unanimously on Thursday night, a budget number equal to what Hamilton Town Meeting voters supported in May. That meant that a Special Town Meeting scheduled for Monday night was no longer needed and the 2012 school budget was approved. Wenham War Memorial: The War Memorial Committee and Town Hall-Police Station Building Committee met together on Thursday morning at the urging of the Board of Selectmen in hopes of having the two group work together to come up with a design for the memorial. 'No Action' Recommended on Iron Rail for At Least 6 Months

The Town Advisory Committee said Wenham town leaders should wait until at least October before making any decision about the future of the Iron Rail property.

A Wenham town committee has recommended the Board of Selectmen “take no action” for at least another six months about whether to redevelop, sell or lease the Iron Rail property. The recommendation came because the committee thought that more information might become available during that time about the future of the nearby Mullen property as well as from a school facilities study. The town-owned Iron Rail property sits at the corner of Grapevine and Rubbly roads and is home to the highway garage, soccer fields and a brick building that is leased to a gymnastics school and dog daycare business, among other uses. The Town Advisory Committee, lead by Chairman Larry Swartz, said it did not make sense to move forward with any plan for Iron Rail…
