Facebook Poll: Next Superintendent Should Articulate Schools' Vision

This week's Hamilton-Wenham Patch Facebook poll says that the next school superintendent should be able to articulate a vision for the school district.

The next school superintendent should be able to articulate a vision for the school district, according to respondents in Hamilton-Wenham Patch’s unscientific Facebook poll. Each Tuesday, Patch posts a local poll question and on Thursday we bring you the results. While there are four key leadership positions now open in the school system, the superintendent job is at the top. In addition to being able to articulate a vision, respondents said it was also important for the next superintendent to demonstrate an ability to put plans in to action and have strong financial skills. Other responses getting one vote was for the next person to have “exactly the same skills as the person fired by the School Committee,” someone who knows education and…

Selectmen Look to Improve Communication with Schools After 'Jarring' Departure

Selectmen from both towns met on Tuesday for the first time since School Superintendent Raleigh Buchanan's departure as school superintendent last Thursday.

There may be lessons from the recent departure of School Superintendent Dr. Raleigh Buchanan that could lead to change in the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District agreement, according to Selectmen and town attorneys. Some of those changes were discussed when the Boards of Selectmen from both towns met on Tuesday night for the first time since Buchanan’s departure last Thursday. One of the chief concerns Selectmen had was that they didn’t understand the extent of the School Committee’s concern with Buchanan’s performance until he reached a “mutual agreement” to leave the district last Thursday. Wenham Selectmen Chairman Molly Martins called Buchanan’s departure “jarring.” “I don’t believe there is a communication clause in the …

School Committee 'Lost Confidence in Dr. Buchanan’s Ability to Lead'

The performance evaluations of former School Superintendent Dr. Raleigh Buchanan shed light of the School Committee's concerns about Buchanan, who started on the job last July.

A majority of the School Committee expressed serious concerns about Dr. Raleigh Buchan’s job performance – ranging from his ability to meet deadlines to his communication with the Committee - in evaluations completed last month. In more than 80 pages worth of evaluations paperwork released on Friday after a request from Hamilton-Wenham Patch – superintendent evaluations are a public document – Committee members used number rating from 1-4 and written comments to nearly uniformly express their dissatisfaction with the work he was doing. The individual evaluations of all nine School Committee members are attached to this story as PDF files. (If you are having trouble reading the documents, there is a "fullscreen" mode and also a "+" …

School Superintendent to Get His First Review

Dr. Raleigh Buchanan, who started as Hamilton-Wenham's new schools superintendent last summer, will get his first review in early May.

Hamilton-Wenham’s “new” school superintendent, Dr. Raleigh Buchanan, is undergoing his first annual performance review 10 months after coming on the job last summer. School Committee Chairman Alexa McCloughan said the members of the nine-member committee have to submit their written reviews to her by Thursday. All of the members received a reminder about the deadline at last week’s School Committee meeting. McCloughan will then compile the reviews into one review that will be presented publicly when the School Committee gives Buchanan his review on May 5. This year’s review is happening no earlier than usual, she said, and is typically done at about this time of the year, except last year, she said. “We didn’t review Dr. (Marinel) McGrath …

I commend the School Committee for choosing Dr. Buchanan to be Superintendent of HWRSD because he has shown sincere interest in bridging what had become a chasm between the schools and the larger community. Dr. Buchanan understands that he and his very able Assistant Superintendent must first dispel the opacity - whether unintended or not - that clouded this relationship for so long before there …   more ›
