Star Generals QB to Play at Bates

The Generals quarterback that led the team to an undefeated regular season in 2011 and the school's first-ever Super Bowl appearance will play college ball at Bates.

Another Generals gridiron star is headed to the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Boston Herald blog "High School Insider" reported on Monday that senior quarterback Trevor Lyons will play at Bates College, a NESCAC Div. 3 school. Lyons led the Generals to a Northeastern Conference/Cape Ann League Tier 4 title in 2011 and took the undefeated team to the Div. 3A Super Bowl - school's first-ever appearance in the big game. While Lyons was knocked out of the Super Bowl game with a shoulder injury and Hamilton-Wenham fell to Bourne, Lyons came back this season to set the school record with 15 touchdown passes in a season. Lyons finished the season with 1,184 throwing yards, 913 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns, the …

Opening Drive Score Enough In Generals Victory

Elliot Burr scores and the defense pitches another shutout as Hamilton-Wenham football improves to 4-0.

The 2011 season has shown so far that the Hamilton-Wenham football team can move the ball up field. Another theme of the team has been its bend-but-not-break defense. Those trends continued in the Generals fourth game of the season against visiting Amesbury at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School on Saturday afternoon. The inside-outside, 1-2 punch of Elliot Burr and Trevor Lyons combined to rush for almost 300 yards. On the other side of the ball the Indians rushed for 170 yards and got inside the Hamilton-Wenham 10 yard line twice, and the 30 two more times. But with those two tendencies working in your favor, the results often are positive. The Generals recorded a 7-0 victory to remain perfect at 4-0. “Our defense bent but didn’t break…

Football Friday: Balance a Key for Undefeated Generals

This week's local football picks. Last week: 5-2. Season: 12-2.

Diversity on offense is critical in football and a pretty talented Newburyport football team learned that the hard way last week in an 18-6 loss to the surging Generals. While the word is definitely out on Hamilton-Wenham's proficient and dominating ground attack behind rugged tailback Elliot Burr and his skilled line, what had to be very pleasing to coach Andrew Morency and Generals' fans in last week’s win was the passing game. Quarterback Trevor Lyons not only rushed for 50 yards, but connected on 11-of-15 attempts for 112 yards passing and a 20-yard scoring strike to Pete Duvall for the game’s final score. Matt Putur was the Generals’ leading receiver with seven catches for 51 yards. “That’s something that we have talked about. …

Generals Mix It Up In 18-6 Win Over Newburyport

Many players come up big to help the football Generals improve to 3-0.

For the second straight week, Hamilton-Wenham’s opponent took its first drive straight down the field and scored a touchdown. And for the second straight week, the Generals opponent was shut out the rest of the game. Last week the offense consisted mostly of the hard inside running of senior captain Elliot Burr and quick outside sprints by junior quarterback Trevor Lyons. But on Friday night in Newburyport, the offense was spread out among Burr, Lyons and Matt Putur on the ground and Lyons finding Pete Duval, Burr, Putur, Cody Cohan and Christian Ecker through the air. The result was an 18-6 victory in sloppy conditions. The win pushed Hamilton-Wenham to 3-0; the Clippers fell to 2-1. “We have a good 1-2, inside/outside punch (with Burr …

Weekend Football Picks: Generals Look for Command Performance

Football Friday sets the table for your weekend football feast. Last week's picks: 7-0. Season: 7-0

What was supposed to be one of the best games of the week turned into a 30-7 laugher for the reigning CAL Small champion Generals last Saturday as they simply overwhelmed Pentucket Last year, Elliott Burr’s game-winning score mid-way through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in a huge 14-7 win for the Generals in their opener. The Clippers would go on to run the table the rest of the way in the CAL Small, but the loss to the Generals proved costly as they saw H-W capture the league and the automatic playoff bid. While both teams reside in different tiers of the new CAL/NEC Conference this year, you can bet the Clippers would love nothing more than to even the score under the lights at War Memorial Stadium. Burr (92 yards) and …

Former Generals Standouts Brao and Prince Meet Again

Jake Prince and James Brao both left their mark on the field and on the court at the Regional. Last week, they met again on opposite sides of the ball in a college football scrimmage.

Former Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School standout student-athletes James Brao and Jake Prince faced each other in a football scrimmage between Tufts University and Bowdoin College on Sept. 16 at Tufts. Both former Generals players, who graduated in June, will face each other again on Oct. 8 for a regular season New England Small College Athletic Conference matchup at Tufts at 1 p.m. Brao played a key part in the Generals football team’s first appearance in school history in the Super Bowl playoffs last fall. His last second kick helped lead the team to the Cape Ann League Small title. He was also a conference all-star in lacrosse last spring. Prince was a standout on the basketball court last winter for the Generals. In an emotional …

The forecast calls for a cloudy day with a chance of rain with temperatures near 70. 2. Canter Brook: At one point earlier this summer, today was set as a deadline for the Hamilton Planning Board to make a decision about the senior housing project planned for the Canter Brook Equestrian Center property. But that has now been pushed back as the issues surrounding water runoff and the soil on the property, among other issues, continue to undergo scrutiny by the board. A decision is now expected by November. 3. High School Football: If you missed the Generals' big win on the gridiron at home over …
