Both the boys' and girls' tennis teams at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School were knocked from the state Div. 3 North tournament on Wednesday with losses to Bedford High School.
The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School fell to Bedford High School on Monday in state tournament semifinals action. In Wenham, the No. 3 seeded boys team, lost 3-2 to No. 10 Bedford on the Pingree Park courts. In Bedford, the No. 4 ranked Bedford team swept the No. 9 Generals 5-0. The losses end the season for both teams, who had been the last Generals team to still be in the postseason tournament in any sport. The boys (13-3) had arrived in the sectional semifinals after a win over Manchester-Essex, 4-1. The team received a first round bye after finishing the season at 12-2, with the only two losses coming to Pentucket Regional High School, which Bedford defeated 4-1 on Monday. The girls team did not …

The Hamilton-Wenham boys' tennis team cruised to a 4-1 victory against Manchester-Essex in the second round of the Div. 3 North Sectionals on Monday.
The stakes were higher, but the outcome was the same on Monday for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School boys' tennis team. Playing a familiar foe in the second round of the state Div. 3 North Sectionals tennis tournament, the Generals defeated Manchester-Essex Regional High School, 4-1, for the third time this season. The win moves the Generals to the semifinals of the tournament. After earning a first round bye for the team's 12-2 regular season record, the No. 3 seeded Generals faced the No. 5 seeded Hornets at Pingree Park knowing they had to take care of business once again. Hamilton-Wenham won both matches by a score of 5-0 earlier in the season, so it would have been easy for the Generals to overlook their North Shore rivals. …

The powerful Marblehead boys' tennis team fell to perennial power Hamilton-Wenham to improve on the Generals one loss record.
There are many reasons why Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School boys' tennis has been so successful. One of them is challenging themselves whenever they get the chance. On Thursday at Pingree Park courts, they did just that when they faced top non-league competition in the form of Marblehead High School. The Magicians came in with a perfect 5-0 record and is standing atop the Northeastern League. That didn’t matter to the perennial power in the Cape Ann League as it pinned a 4-1 loss on the visitors. “(Marblehead) is a team we’ve scheduled throughout the years because we know they are always good,” said Generals coach Joe Maher. “There were good matches at all positions.” Maher, whose team improved to 5-1 with the lone loss coming to …

The Generals boys' tennis team let one slip away against a tough Pentucket team to open the season, but won handily against Triton and Manchester-Essex.
If high school athletes can learn from a loss, then sometimes it is not such a bad thing. Even though the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School boys' tennis team (2-1) dropped a heartbreaker in its season-opening match versus Pentucket, the squad righted the ship the very next day with a resounding victory over visiting Triton. The loss broke a 40 match Cape Ann League win streak for the Generals. Coach Joe Maher felt that in many of the team’s five matches in the 3-2 loss at Pentucket on April 11 his players weren’t taking the play to their opponents. Instead, the other team was deciding the style and the Generals were not able to take control. “You’ll see momentum swings from time to time (in matches),” said Maher. “In a couple of the …
