Near Misses Left Generals Baseball Out of the Tournament

The high school baseball team missed some key plays in some keys games, leaving them out of the tournament in Coach Doug Hoak's final season.

It wasn’t just "coach-speak" when Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School baseball coach Doug Hoak explained that his team could have made the tournament, despite its 6-12 record. The difference was three games that the Generals lost. With wins in those three games, it would have put them at 9-9 and in the tournament. “We were close,” said retiring Hoak, who donned the coach’s clipboard for the final time in a 2-0 loss to Bishop Fenwick last week. “You look at the 6-12 record and it looks far removed from the tournament. But if you look back through the season there are games we could have won.” That final game against Fenwick is a prime example. Ace Cam Charette threw a one-hitter and lost to the Crusaders 2-0. And Fenwick was no slouch, …

Lynnfield Gets Back at Generals, Charette

Jim Love's two-run homer was one of the lone bright spots for the Generals who lost at home on Monday.

In Monday’s rematch, the Lynnfield baseball team was able to get to Hamilton-Wenham’s Cam Charette. It wasn’t difficult to see the difference between an early season start for the Generals ace and one at the end of the schedule on three days rest. At the same time, the Pioneers’ bats were in mid-season form and we able to crank out 11 hits in an 8-2 Cape Ann League win at Patton Park. In the opening weeks of the Generals campaign, Charette pitched a gem against Lynnfield – one of the top squads in the CAL – yielding only four hits with 10 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory. On Monday, he showed some fatigue as he was touched for six runs in the final three frames, including three walks in the seventh inning. “He left a lot of pitches up and they …

Athlete of the Week: Flamethrower Cam Charette

Hamilton-Wenham senior Cam Charette is the Athlete of the Week.

It seems unfair that a pitcher as tall and strong as Hamilton-Wenham senior Cam Charette should get an extra six inches standing on the mound. By the time Charette releases the ball, a batter has a split second to react. Quite often, it's too late and the ball is in the mitt. Charette has dominated since the season began, striking out 10 batters in a complete game shutout of Lynnfield for the Generals' first win of the season. To date, Charette has a 0.00 earned run average. In his 17 innings pitched so far this season, he has 25 strikeouts and given up just six hits. Hamilton-Wenham Patch had a chance to talk to Charette on Facebook. This is what he had to say. Hamilton-Wenham Patch: What are you thinking about when you're staring down a …

VIDEO/IMAGE GALLERY: Charette Pitches Shutout, Gives Generals First Win

Pitcher Cam Charette struck out 10 as Generals baseball defeated Lynnfield, 3-0, on Thursday to get the first win of the year.

Hamilton-Wenham senior Cam Charette pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Generals to their first win of the season on Thursday, 3-0, over the Lynnfield Pioneers. Charette struck out 10 and held the Pioneers to four hits, while the Generals (1-2) got enough offense to hand Lynnfield (3-1) its first loss. "It felt good today, my arm felt good," Charette said. "It felt strong and I just threw the fastball nice and good." Lynnfield was hurt by two errors that allowed the Generals to score two unearned runs. Despite giving up just the one earned run, Lynnfield senior pitcher Ben Kenrew took the loss. "Those errors cost us," Lynnfield Coach John O'Brien said. The Generals scored twice in the top of the second inning, with junior third-…

Generals Are Ready to 'Play Ball'

The Hamilton-Wenham baseball Generals will need to pick up the slack for departed and injured players in 2011.

The baseball Generals will have a different look this spring, with new uniforms and some fresh faces at several starting positions. There will be a strong core of returning players, including seniors Jake Prince and Jim Love. But Generals Head Coach Doug Hoak will need to find replacements for two of last year's biggest stars — league MVP Matt Cook, who is now pitching at Northeastern University, and Pat Hendrickson, who will miss the season after suffering a torn ACL he sufferred during the basketball season. "It's a huge loss," Hoak said, noting that Hendrickson had been a starter since his freshman year. "It's a big bat out of the line-up." Last year, the Generals made it through to the second round of the tournament, and Hoak expects …
