Five Things to Know on Sept. 26: Final Day for Discount Tickets

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

Today is Wednesday, Sept. 26. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham: 1. Early Release: It’s Wednesday, which means it is early release day for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District. Elementary schools get out at 12:45 p.m. and the high school and middle school get out at 1:30 p.m. 2. Topsfield Fair: Wednesday is the last day to buy discount tickets for the 2012 Topsfield Fair, which starts on Friday. There’s nowhere in the two towns where the discount tickets are sold, but you can buy them at the Fairgrounds on Route 1 in Topsfield. The closest place is likely Dawson’s True Value in North Beverly. You can also get then at Marblehead Bank in Beverly; Cherry Farm Creamery, Gibney Gardens and The Butchery in …

West Nile Found in Mosquito Near Chebacco Lake, More Spraying Planned

The Hamilton Board of Health announced on Friday that another mosquito tested positive for West Nile Virus and another round of spraying will be conducted.

West Nile Virus has again been found in a mosquito in Hamilton, again on the east end of town. Health Agent Leslie Whalen said on Friday that the positive test means that officials plan to again spray next week. “We chose Wednesday because it looks like it could be too cold on Monday or Tuesday,” she said. Spraying can not be conducted when it is raining or is below 60 degrees. The spraying will occur along Essex Street and roads east of Essex Street between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Thursday, she said. It will be the fourth time that spraying has been conducted this summer and fall in Hamilton. First Human EEE Case Reported in Essex County

The fist case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in a human is a man in his 70s in Georgetown.

The first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in a human in Essex County has been reported in Georgetown, according to the state Department of Public Health and a report in the Newburyport Daily News. No human cases of EEE or West Nile Virus have been reported in Hamilton and Wenham. Mosquitoes have tested positive for both EEE and West Nile Virus and Hamilton has sprayed three times and Wenham has sprayed twice in targeted areas. No further spraying has been announced. The Hamilton Board of Health has a meeting scheduled for Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Room at Hamilton Town Hall. Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile in Wenham, Second Round of Spraying Planned

A mosquito tested positive for the West Nile Virus over the weekend in Wenham and spraying is planned for Thursday night.

For the first time this summer, a mosquito in Wenham has tested positive for West Nile Virus. Based on the positive test, the Wenham Board of Health has asked the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District to conduct spraying on Thursday night. The spraying is being done in what Health Agent Greg Bernard calls a “targeted area” between 7:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. “The targeted areas will begin at the intersection of Larch Row and Grapevine Road and continue along Grapevine Road, including Gordon College, to the town line,” Bernard said in announcing the spraying on Wednesday afternoon. “The Iron Rail Property, consisting of the DPW garage and playing fields will also be included in the targeted spray.” The spraying …

Mosquito Spraying Planned for Highland Street on Monday night

The Highland Street area of Hamilton will be sprayed for mosquitoes on Monday night.

For the third time this summer, spraying for mosquitoes will happen on Monday night in Hamilton. Health Agent Leslie Whalen said on Saturday that mosquitoes have tested positive for both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. A Connect-CTY phone call also wnet out to town residents on Sunday afternoon. “As a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness, targeted truck spraying in the area along Highland Street and roads west of Highland Street will be conducted in Hamilton on Monday, Sept. 10 between the hours of 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. - weather permitting,” she said in announcing the latest spraying. “Residents in the targeted areas are asked to stay indoors during the spraying.” The spraying will not happen if …

Mosquito Testing Continues After Positive EEE in Topsfield

Mosquitoes in Hamilton and Wenham continue to be tested for Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus.

Mosquito testing continues in Hamilton and Wenham after a mosquito last week tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Topsfield. The mosquito that tested positive for EEE in Topsfield was found in the corner of the town closest to Ipswich and Boxford, said Jack Card, director of the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito and Wetlands Management District. Topsfield officials were scheduled to meet on Monday night to consider its options and whether it wants to spray for mosquitoes. Both Boxford and Ipswich were notified, Card said, and Ipswich plans targeted spraying. A mosquito also tested positive for EEE in Reading, according to a report in The Boston Globe. No West Nile Found So Hamilton Won't Spray for Mosquitoes

Hamilton decided at a recent Board of Health meeting not to spray for mosquitoes based on the lack of a positive testing for the West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

The Hamilton Board of Health decided last week not to spray for mosquitoes because no mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Ensephalitis, according to Nancy Stevens, administrative assistant to Health Agent Leslie Whelan Earlier this month, a mosquito in Wenham tested positive for West Nile Virus near Iron Rail. Four days after the positive test, the Northeast Mosquito Control District came to Wenham and sprayed in the area of Iron Rail. And earlier this month a mosquito also tested positive for West Nile Virus in Ipswich. Symptons of West Nile Virus include a fever, headache, body aches and possibly a rash. No Further Mosquito Spraying Planned in Wenham, For Now

The area around the Iron Rail property in Wenham were sprayed on Tuesday night and no further spraying is planned unless further tests come back showing that mosquitoes are carrying West Nile virus.

The Iron Rail property in Wenham was successfully sprayed for mosquitoes on Tuesday night after a mosquito infected with West Nile virus was found there last Friday. “That’s all that is going to be done right now,” said Jack Card, director of Northeast Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District, which performed the spraying at the direction of the Wenham Board of Health. The spraying truck spent about 30-45 minutes at dusk in Wenham administering a ”barrier treatment” around the playing fields, cemetery and Iron Rail building and Department of Public Works garage off Grapevine and Rubbly roads, Card said. West Nile Found in Wenham Mosquito, Spraying Planned for Tuesday Night

A mosquito infected with West Nile virus has been found in Wenham and spraying is planned for Tuesday night near the Iron Rail property.

West Nile virus has been discovered in mosquitoes in Wenham and spraying will be conducted on Tuesday night near where the infected mosquito was discovered. The announcement was made in a memo posted to the town of Wenham’s website on Tuesday. The infected mosquito was found near the Department of Public Works garage at Iron Rail off Grapevine Road. “Additional mosquito surveillance traps will be set up in Wenham to determine how wide spread the issue is,” according to the announcement. It is the first mosquito found with West Nile virus in Wenham this year and the 121st mosquito with the virus found this year in the state.
