Wenham Seniors Can Get Ice-Gripping Shoe Accessory at Half Price

Yak Trax are being offered top Wenham senior citizens at half price.

Wenham residents are being offered winter traction devices for their shoes at half price. The Wenham Council on Aging is selling neon green Yak Trax for $7, about half of the normal price. The COA has 50 pairs available in size small, medium and large. The Yak Trax are being made available at a discount by the Friends of the Wenham Council on Aging. The "handy little grabbers" slip over shoes or boots to provide traction outside in snowy or icy weather, the COA said when it announced the offer on Thursday. The winter traction devices are being offered to Wenham seniors because of "a sincere wish to improve senior safety during winter months," the COA said. Senior Van to Be Parked in Well-Lit Town Hall Lot After Latest Vandalism

The Hamilton-Wenham Senior Van had its window smashed in a case of vandalism overnight on Sunday night or Monday morning.

The Hamilton-Wenham Senior van will now be parked in the well-lit Wenham Town Hall parking lot, across the street from the police station, after the van was vandalized for the third time in eight months on Sunday night. The damage to the van’s windshield was discovered by the driver when he showed up just past 9 a.m. on Monday. The van is typically parked in the parking lot next to the Wenham Senior Center, at the corner of School Street and Ellis Avenue. Wenham police said a cement statue was smashed into the windshield and hood, causing the windshield to “spiderweb.” The vandalism remains under investigation by police. Mark Andrews, interim Wenham town administrator, said Monday that the van will now be parked in the Town Hall parking …

Shared Senior Director to Leave; Selectmen Consider Increasing COA Funding

Shared Senior Director Susan Carp will be leaving Hamilton and Wenham to take a new job in Arlington.

It is the last official week on the job for the first ever shared senior director for Hamilton and Hamilton. Last week, Susan Carp of Wenham accepted the position of executive director of the Council on Aging in Arlington. Carp’s last week in Hamilton and Wenham is this week, Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo said. There had been “some discussion” about extending her work through next week, he said. In January 2011, Carp was hired as the shared director of the Council on Aging in both Hamilton and Wenham. She also was the coordinator for the Hamilton-Wenham senior van service. Arlington Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine announced Carp’s hire in Arlington last week. No further information was available about her start date or pay. She was …

Senior Van Windshield Smashed for Second Time in Six Months

Vandals smashed the windshield on the senior van overnight - the second incident in six months.

For the second time in six months, vandals have smashed the front window of the Hamilton-Wenham Councils on Aging van. Shared Councils on Aging Director Susan Carp said 11 seniors were scheduled for rides to medical appointments and other trips on Tuesday. They will have to either cancel their appointment or find another ride, she said. Vandals threw a rock through the van's windshield, Carp said. Carp said the van will be out of service for at least a day, or possibly longer, while repairs are made. She will give riders an update as more information becomes available. Vandals Knock Senior Van Out of Service

Vandals threw a rock through the windshield of the Hamilton-Wenham senior van on Monday night, knocking it out of service until it gets a new windshield.

Vandals smashed the windshield on the Hamilton-Wenham senior van with a large rock on Monday night, putting it out of service for at least one day. Tuesday’s van schedule had to be completely canceled, said shared Councils on Aging Director Susan Carp, who manages the van service for both towns. That meant seven senior citizens in the two towns missed a medical appointment, had to reschedule it or were forced make last minute plans to find other transportation on Tuesday. “Many seniors and their families have been inconvenienced by this and folks are missing medical appointments,” Carp said on Tuesday morning. Arrangements are being made to get the windshield repaired and Wednesday’s van schedule may need to be canceled too, Carp said. The…

VIDEO: Communities Come Together For Kite Flying

Hamilton, Wenham and Beverly collaborate to brings residents the fifth annual Kite Day.

About 250 people passed through Birch Plains Field to join in on a kite flying adventure.  Kite Day, sponsored by the Friends of the Wenham Council on Aging, Wenham Council on Aging, Hamilton-Wenham Recreation Department, and the city of Beverly Recreation Department, is in its fifth year. Dick Eddy, chairman of Kite Day, said it was one of its most successful years.  Organizers of the event hope it can bridge the generational divide between young and old.  "The opportunity for some of the seniors that are alone, they get to see the little ones and it warms the heart," said Paul Mendonca, a Wenham Council on Aging board member.
