An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.
Today is Friday, Dec. 28. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham: 1. Sun: The sun is expected to return to the sky on Friday, with the forecast calling for high temperatures in the mid-30s and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. 2. Trash: Another reminder – trash pickup is delayed by a day all week. That means Friday morning pickup will be for residents that typically get pickup on Thursday in Hamilton. It is a “blue bag week,” so there will not be any collection of the black trash barrels, only recycling, organics and any paid blue bags. 3. Gas: The least expensive gallon of gas in the two towns is $3.37 at G & M Motors at Asbury and Highland streets. It is $3.39 at Hamilton Convenience and Oliver Gulf in downtown …

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.
Today is Wednesday, Dec. 26. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham: 1. Dry: Wednesday is forecasted to be a dry day with increasing clouds throughout the day with a high temperature in the mid-30s. 2. Trash: Trash pickup will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week because of Christmas Day on Tuesday. That means if your typical pickup day in Wenham is Tuesday you’ll be getting pickup this morning – Wednesday. And if you typically get pickup on Wednesday in Hamilton, make sure your recycling, organics and blue bags are out there on Thursday morning. 3. Snowstorm: Do you remember this day two years ago? Yes, it was the first big storm that delivered about a foot of snow to the two towns in what would be an …

The top question on Monday morning is whether trash pickup is still happening on in Wenham.
Trash pickup will happen as usual on Monday in Wenham, according to Wenham Department of Public Works Director Bill Tyack. On Sunday night, Wenham Interim Town Administrator Mark Andrews said that Wenham Town Hall would be closed on Monday and only essential Police Department, Fire Department and Public Works employees were required to report to work. On its Twitter feed, Hiltz Disposal - which has the contract for trash, recycling and organics pickup in both towns - said that that "all trash and recycle trucks are out working a normal Monday schedule at this point," as of 9:50 a.m. on Monday.

Clouds: Tuesday is forecasted to be a cloudy day with rain to start and a chance of showers throughout the day. Temperatures will top out in the 50s. 2. Restaurants: Are you looking to try a new restaurant close to home at a reasonable price? You may want to check out the offerings at Beverly Restaurant Week, which runs through Thursday. There are 15 restaurants participating with either a 3-course dinner for $25 or 2-course dinner for $15, before tax, drinks and gratuities. 3. An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.
Today is Monday, May 28. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Clouds: After some pretty darn good weekend weather, things turn a bit south on Monday. The forecast calls for cloudy skies with temperatures into the upper 60s. There’s also a chance of showers. 2. Trash: Monday is a holiday so regular trash pickup in Wenham on Monday is delayed until Tuesday and then trash will be delayed by a day for the rest of the week. It is a “blue bag” week in Hamilton, meaning the only trash pickup will be in a blue bag. There will be recycling and organics collection in both towns plus trash pickup in Wenham. 3. Circus: The Picadilly Circus was originally scheduled to arrive at the Topsfield Fairgrounds to open a week worth’s of shows on Monday. …

The following was submitted by Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo, Wenham Town Administrator Jeff Chelgren and Sue Patrolia, sustainability coordinator for Hamilton and Wenham. It is part 2 of 3 in a series of articles in advance of the new trash, recycling and organics program, which begins on April 2. Starting the first week of April, residents of Hamilton and Wenham will be able to take advantage of new trash and recycling services. The change from every other week separated recycling to weekly single stream recycling is welcome because more items can be recycled, more often and they all go in the same bin or barrel. Every household will be receiving a new barrel for trash, specialized for automated collection, so the old one can be…

The first of three articles from town officials in Hamilton and Wenham outlining the new trash, recycling and organics pickup plan that will go into place beginning April 2.
The following was submitted by Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo, Wenham Town Administrator Jeff Chelgren and Sue Patrolia, sustainability coordinator for Hamilton and Wenham. Starting the first week of April, residents of Hamilton and Wenham will be able to take advantage of new trash and recycling services. Everyone will have free weekly pick up of single-stream recycling and organic recycling. The single-stream recycling program allows all recyclables to be combined, including plastic, tin, glass, paper and much more. All food waste with bones, coffee grounds, soiled paper towels and more can go into the green organic recycling bins provided by the towns. These two new recycling options enable residents to greatly reduce the …

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.
Today is Wednesday, Jan. 11. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Weather: We have essentially a perfect winter day in store for Wednesday before a storm works into the area, beginning on Wednesday night with what is forecasted to be a mix on some snow, sleet and rain. During the day on Wednesday, it will be sunny with temperatures into the mid-30s. 2. Musher: The New England Sled Dog races were originally scheduled to come to Appleton Farms this weekend, and as part of that Dr. Jerry Vanek will be appearing at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School. While the races were moved to Feb. 4-5 when there will hopefully be more snow on the ground, Vanek kept his original date. Vanek will talk about his 20-year career as a veterinarian for …

At least two Wenham Selectmen said Tuesday that they think the changes being contemplated to trash collection go before Town Meeting voters this fall.
Two members of the Wenham Board of Selectmen said Tuesday that they think a proposal to make changes in trash collection should go to Town Meeting voters in November. Both Selectmen John Clemenzi and Patrick Wilson said that, while they support changes to the way trash and recyclable materials are collected, they favor a Town Meeting vote versus leaving the decision in the hands of the three-member Board of Selectmen. Now on the table for Selectmen from both Hamilton and Wenham is a change in trash collection that would include weekly single-stream recycling and organics collection and every other week collection of one “free” barrel included in taxes with the option of buying more bags. Currently, both towns have a “trash reduction …

Proponents say that a "pay-as-you-throw" trash system encourages more recycling and could possibly save the towns money.
Wenham may join Hamilton in a "pay-as-you-throw" trash program designed to encourage residents to increase recycling. And the two towns will explore the possibility of bringing the school district and some businesses - which have commercial trash collection contracts - into a combined system, operated by Hiltz Waste Disposal. Communities that have pay-as-you-throw programs charge residents for the collection of regular trash based on the amount they throw away. Residents are not charged for recycled materials, which creates an economic incentive for residents to recycle more and generate less waste. Traditionally, residents pay for waste collection through property taxes or a fixed fee, regardless of how much or how little trash they throw…

The town of Hamilton owns, a town hall, DPW building/yard, Patton Park, Patton Property, the COA (Old Library), Emergency Center, Patton homestead, and part of a library/rec center. None of these building/entities pay taxes. Yet all you can see are schools? You many need to see an optometrist.   more ›
