An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

Today is Friday, Dec. 28. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham: 1. Sun: The sun is expected to return to the sky on Friday, with the forecast calling for high temperatures in the mid-30s and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. 2. Trash: Another reminder – trash pickup is delayed by a day all week. That means Friday morning pickup will be for residents that typically get pickup on Thursday in Hamilton. Gas: The least expensive gallon of gas in the two towns is $3.37 at G & M Motors at Asbury and Highland streets. It is $3.39 at Hamilton Convenience and Oliver Gulf in downtown …

Is There Trash Pickup During Hurricane Sandy on Monday?

The top question on Monday morning is whether trash pickup is still happening on in Wenham.

Trash pickup will happen as usual on Monday in Wenham, according to Wenham Department of Public Works Director Bill Tyack. On Sunday night, Wenham Interim Town Administrator Mark Andrews said that Wenham Town Hall would be closed on Monday and only essential Police Department, Fire Department and Public Works employees were required to report to work. On its Twitter feed, Hiltz Disposal - which has the contract for trash, recycling and organics pickup in both towns - said that that "all trash and recycle trucks are out working a normal Monday schedule at this point," as of 9:50 a.m. on Monday.

What is Single Stream Recycling and How Does it Work with the New Trash Program?

Town officials in Hamilton and Wenham explain single stream recycling, which is one of the changes that is coming with the new trash, recycling and organics collection program that begins on April 2.

The following was submitted by Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo, Wenham Town Administrator Jeff Chelgren and Sue Patrolia, sustainability coordinator for Hamilton and Wenham. It is part 2 of 3 in a series of articles in advance of the new trash, recycling and organics program, which begins on April 2. Starting the first week of April, residents of Hamilton and Wenham will be able to take advantage of new trash and recycling services. The change from every other week separated recycling to weekly single stream recycling is welcome because more items can be recycled, more often and they all go in the same bin or barrel. Every household will be receiving a new barrel for trash, specialized for automated collection, so the old one can be…

Why isn't aseptic packaging listed? It was my understanding because these packages were lined with foil, they could not be recycled just as the foil drink pouches are not recyclable. The information provided needs to be consistent from website, to booklet, to articles. The booklet is a novelette, the website contains different info than the booklet, and then new information is provided here. …   more ›

Everyone will have free weekly pick up of single-stream recycling and organic recycling. The single-stream recycling program allows all recyclables to be combined, including plastic, tin, glass, paper and much more. Wenham Selectmen Favor Town Meeting Vote on Trash Changes

At least two Wenham Selectmen said Tuesday that they think the changes being contemplated to trash collection go before Town Meeting voters this fall.

Two members of the Wenham Board of Selectmen said Tuesday that they think a proposal to make changes in trash collection should go to Town Meeting voters in November. Both Selectmen John Clemenzi and Patrick Wilson said that, while they support changes to the way trash and recyclable materials are collected, they favor a Town Meeting vote versus leaving the decision in the hands of the three-member Board of Selectmen. Now on the table for Selectmen from both Hamilton and Wenham is a change in trash collection that would include weekly single-stream recycling and organics collection and every other week collection of one “free” barrel included in taxes with the option of buying more bags. Currently, both towns have a “trash reduction …

Both Towns Consider 'Pay-As-You-Throw' Trash Fee Program

Proponents say that a "pay-as-you-throw" trash system encourages more recycling and could possibly save the towns money.

Wenham may join Hamilton in a "pay-as-you-throw" trash program designed to encourage residents to increase recycling. And the two towns will explore the possibility of bringing the school district and some businesses - which have commercial trash collection contracts - into a combined system, operated by Hiltz Waste Disposal. Communities that have pay-as-you-throw programs charge residents for the collection of regular trash based on the amount they throw away. Residents are not charged for recycled materials, which creates an economic incentive for residents to recycle more and generate less waste. Traditionally, residents pay for waste collection through property taxes or a fixed fee, regardless of how much or how little trash they throw…

I consider myself to be ultra-conscious about unecessary waste, my household composts and recycles to the fullest extent - all paper, plastic, glass, eggshells, vegetable matter, coffee grinds, seafood, you name it. In my opinion this is a bad idea. What concerns me is the lack lack of foresight regarding the TYPE of garbage that will sit around for an additional week. As mentioned before there's…   more ›
