A View Today of What Was Perkins Store

Here is the answer to our latest "Then and Now" historical photo contest.

The latest "Then and Now" historical photo feature shows Frank Perkins' store in downtown Wenham. Both the “old” photo and the “new” photo are attached to this story. The photo, looking north, was taken taken on March 27, 1891. D.G. Howard from Essex is shown making a delivery to the store in the photo. On the righthand of the building, which is now home to Grassy Roots, was a drug store run by Perkins' brother, James. There's a new historical photo posted every Tuesday. From the late 1940's until the mid 1980's the store was owned and run by Wes and Jesse Chadder I think it was named Wenham Market but to the locals it was called Chadder's.   more ›

Then and Now

Workers Were Installing Poles For Electric Wires

Here is the answer to our latest "Then and Now" historical photo contest.

The latest "Then and Now" historical photo feature shows workers installing wire poles in anticipation of the arrival of electric streetcars along Main Street in Wenham. The photo was taken on May 27, 1886. The first electric streetcar rolled up Main Street in 1897. Both the “old” photo and the “new” photo are attached to this story. The exact location of the old photo may not match the new photo, but a home just out of view in the new photo matches the home in the old photo. There's a new historical photo posted every Tuesday. Historical Photo Showed Wenham's First Fire Engine

Here is the answer to our latest "Then and Now" historical photo contest.

The latest "Then and Now" historical photo feature shows the members of the Wenham Fire Department in front of its then-Main Street station on April 2, 1891. Both the “old” photo and the “new” photo are attached to this story. The department was posing with its hand-pumped named “Enon #1” in front of the station, which was called the Enon Building. The location of the current day Fire Department is just off to the right of the photo. As Tom Luxton points out, while there is a former fire station on Main Street that is now home to Viola Lovely, you will notice it is not the same building that was there is 1891. Michelle is partially correct. The building is no longer there. After housing the Enon handtub it eventually became the Water Dept building and later was moved to the Wenham Museum. I think at some point in it's history the building also was home to a Veterans' organization.   more ›

Then and Now

'Then and Now' Downtown Building Burned in the 30s

Here's the answer to the most recent "Then and Now" historical photo, which was taken in downtown Hamilton nearly 120 years ago.

The latest "Then and Now" historical photo feature shows the Smith Block on Railroad Avenue in Hamilton on April 5, 1892. Both the “old” photo and the “new” photo are attached to this story. The building burned in 1934. We were also told that it suffeered a less destrictiuve fire in the 1920s. The building today is home to Timeless Interiors and Marybeth's, plus a new flower shop that is planned to open next month. Next door, the building that is currently is home to Winfrey's, looks much the same today than it did 120 years ago. There's a new historical photo posted every Tuesday.
