Five Things to Know on Jan. 30: Deadline to Register for Father-Daughter Winter Ball

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 30. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham: 1. Warm: Wednesday is forecasted to be a phenomenally warm day, with temperatures into the 50s. Unfortunately, the sky is expected to be cloudy and rainy. Winds will be gusty, especially later in the day. 2. Father-Daughter: The deadline to register for this Saturday’s Father-Daughter Winter Ball at the Community House of Hamilton-Wenham is Wednesday. Last year it sold out. The cost is $40 per couple and $15 for each additional child. It runs 6-8 p.m. and will include catered hors d'oeuvres, beverages and a chocolate fountain for dessert plus a DJ and dancing. 3. Watershed Association: Heavy Rain Will Affect Water Quality

Three local non-profit organizations write about the impact of heavy rain and runoff of our local water bodies.

The United States is experiencing more intense rain and snow storms, and the Northeast specifically has seen the highest increase relative to the rest of the country ­- a 67 percent increase in the amount of rain or snow falling in the heaviest storms. As storms increase in intensity, flooding and water quality has become a larger concern. Increased development across our watersheds can also lead to higher high flows and flooding during storm events. Hurricane Sandy is projected to move toward the northeast this weekend, potentially bringing heavy rains. When it rains, or when snow melts, pollution in storm drains or on our paved surfaces is carried to our rivers, beaches, and bays. According to Think Blue Massachusetts, there is a direct …

Today is Friday, June 8. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Steven Kellogg: Children’s author and illustrator Steven Kellogg (a personal favorite since childhood for Hamilton-Wenham Patch editor Bobby Gates) appeared at Gallery Della-Piana back in April. And his work has been on display there since then in a special, low-hanging display that is kid-friendly. The last day for that display is Friday. The hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 2. Tisei: Republican Richard Tisei, the Republican from Wakefield who is seeking the Sixth Congressional District seat currently held by Democrat John Tierney of Salem, will be live chatting here on Patch on Friday.
