Health Officials Plan Spring Reminder About Flies in Trash

The Hamilton Board of health plan a mailing this spring to reminder residents about the chance of maggots and flies in their trash.

Keeping trash for up to two weeks could cause greater occurrences of flies and maggots, according to a study done in Spokane, Wash. And based on that data, the Hamilton Board of Health decided Wednesday it plans to launch a public education campaign this spring to alert residents of the possibility of flies and maggots in the trash and offer tips to avoid it. "They did find a greater incidence of flies," said Board of Health Chairman Lindle Willnow said about the study from out west. The topic of the health concern of trash collection every other week had been on the board's agenda last fall but had been tabled as the board and Health Department grappled with mosquitoes infected with Eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile Virus and the …

Officials Ask to Keep Straws Out of Curbside Organics

Residents are reminded to keep straws out of the curbside organics collection.

Residents are being reminded to keep straws out of the compost. Gretel Clark of the Recycling Committee, who helped adopt the original curbside compost collection in the two towns, said that Brick Ends Farm – where the composting occurs - has seen that the organics that are collected curbside in Hamilton and Wenham is coming in with plastic straws in it. The straws do not compost and also slip through the one inch filters used in the compost process, Clark said. “The plea is to please keep those straws out of your green bucket,” Clark said, adding that she does not think residents also want to see straws in the finished compost that is available to residents who participate in curbside compositing. The compost is now available at the …

Where Can I Pick Up Compost?

Compost is now available, for free to participants in the two town's curbside organics collection program, at the Wenham Highway garage.

The compost from the organic material collected as part of the trash collection program in both towns is now available in Wenham. The Departments of Public Works in both Hamilton and Wenham announced on Tuesday that the compost is now available at the Wenham Highway Department garage at the Iron Rail property on Grapevine Road. Since the organics collection program started more than two years ago, compost was available for free to program participants at Patton Park in Hamilton. Hamilton DPW Director John Tomasz said in an e-mail that the amount of compost “taken (from the Patton Park site) has been significantly greater than anyone expected.” The move to the Wenham Highway Department means it will be “under a more watchful eye.” The …

Town Officials: Make Sure Black Barrels are Close to the Curb

The town-issued black trash barrels need to be placed close to the street so that the trash truck can pick it up.

The town-issued trash barrels need to be close enough to the street so that the trash truck can pick it up, town officials in Hamilton and Wenham are reminding residents. “I can’t emphasize enough that your black automated bin needs to be in proximity to the curb so that the arm can grab it and tip the trash," Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo recently told Selectmen. “If it is up in your driveway we would not be able to pick it up.” Black barrels are picked up each week in Wenham and every other week in Hamilton. This week, black barrels are being picked up in Hamilton - Wednesday through Friday. Last week, Wenham officials issued a reminder that the bins needs to be close to the street and away from other bins and other items. "In …

No Black Barrel Pickup Until Next Week in Hamilton

Thursday marks the start of the second "blue bag only" week for trash pickup in Hamilton. Recycling and organics will be picked up but not trash in the "free" town-issued black barrels - that will happen again next week.

Just recycling bins and organics barrels – and not black trash barrels – will be picked up this week in Hamilton. Hamilton town officials are reminding residents that this week is a “blue bag week" for trash pickup, meaning that residents who want trash picked up will need to put it out in a paid blue bag. Otherwise, they need to wait until next week to put out the town-issued black barrel. “They are only going to pick up official blue bags this week,” said Allison Jenkins, administrative assist to the Hamilton Department of Public Works. Jenkins said workers from Hiltz will leave black barrels at the curb. Workers will look in black barrels and if there in trash in a blue bag inside they will pick it up, but it is recommended that blue …
