Run Through Wenham to Help Bombing Victims

An informal run Monday night that will make its way up Route 1A in Wenham will help raise Monday for two victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

A run through Wenham on Monday night will help support a Salem man and his son who were injured in the Boston marathon bombings. “It’s open to everyone,” said Wes Lassen, manager at New England Running Co. in the Commodore Plaza. Stephen Woolfenden and his son Leo were injured in Monday’s bombings. They were while waiting for Amber, Stephen’s wife and Leo’s mother, to cross the finish line. The run start at 6:30 p.m. and head north from the store up Route 1A to Larch Row and turn around and head back to the store. Lassen said he’s not sure how many people to expect will come out, but that all ages and abilities are invited. The Woolfendens are members of the Salem-based Wicked Running Club and many club members are expected to participate…

Wenham Fire Started in Kitchen, Nobody Injured

A fire damaged a Wenham home on Thursday morning.

A fire that damaged a Wenham home on Thursday morning started in the home’s kitchen, according to Fire Chief Bob Blanchard. It remains undetermined exactly how the fire started, but it is not considered suspicious, he said. Nobody was hurt. The fire at 92 Main St. was discovered at about 8:40 a.m. when the male homeowner returned home and discovered the smoke detectors going off and the home filled with smoke. He called the Fire Department. “There was heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen,” Blanchard said when firefighters first arrived. It was unknown how long the fire may have been burning before it was discovered, Blanchard said. “We had it under control pretty quickly,” he said. It took firefighters about a half hour to bring the fire …

Rare, Iconic Bird Makes Wenham Appearance

Several bald eagles made an appearance on Wenham Lake on Friday.

It was a relatively rare sight on Wenham Lake on Friday. A group of bald eagles was spotted on the lake, eating away at an animal carcass on the ice. It wasn’t the first time bald eagles have been seen on the lake, but the sight is somewhat rare. Bald eagles were also seen on the lake back in 2007, according to a report in the Salem News at the time. An amateur photographer from Beverly, Rob Whiting, told the paper at the time that he often photographs eagles on the Merrimack River but had not seen them in the Wenham area. The state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife does not have any evidence that the eagles are nesting on the lake, said assistant director Tom French. It is more likely that the birds are from Maine or Canada and are …

I passed by the lake that AM and it looked to me to be three adults and two juveniles. This is not the first time I've seen Bald Eagles in the area; I've seen them at Wenham Lake as well as the Ipswich sewage treatment plan. Wonderful sight!   more ›

Wenham Firefighters Help Fight Motel Fire in Beverly

A three alarm fire damaged a portion of the Lakeview Motel in North Beverly on Thursday.

Wenham firefighters were among at least seven departments that battled a three alarm fire Thursday afternoon at Beverly Garden Suites, also known as the Lakeview Motor Lodge, in North Beverly. Nobody was injured. The fire damaged several units. The motel is located at the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Enon Street, across from the North Beverly train station on Route 1A. Beverly Fire Chief Paul Cotter said at the scene that a plumber was working in an unit on the first floor when a torch he was using caught some materials on fire. The fire then spread to adjacent units and units above, he said. A person staying upstairs noticed the smoke and called 911 at about 1:15 p.m. The guests in that room, two photographers from Philadelphia who were …

Should More Students Take the Bus To School?

One resident who lives across from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School had some signs up this fall that prompted a discussion about students taking the bus to school.

There's often traffic backups around the schools - and especially along Route 1A near Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School and Miles River Middle School - at opening and closing times. Some of the traffic is from students. All 136 students spaces at the high school have been sold, according to Donna Bunk, administrative assistant to Superintendent Michael Harvey. And about 650 students ride the bus each day, according to Bunk, based on data provided by Salter Transportation, which operates the school district's buses. That is about 57 percent of the 1,135 students that go to school on the combined campus - 430 at the middle school and 705 at the high school. The traffic backups prompted one school neighbor to put up signs this fall that …

I say....TAKE THAT OPTION AWAY FROM YOUR CHILDREN! They take the bus, PERIOD! My 2 boys always took the bus. There wasn't another option given to them. I took the …   more ›

Detour and Delays Expected Again Friday for Crossing Work

A detour for southbound traffic and delays for all drivers on Route 1A through downtown Hamilton are expected on Friday while work continues to rebuild the railroad crossing.

A detour for some drivers and delays for others are in store on Friday as repairs are scheduled to be wrapped up on the railroad crossing in downtown Hamilton. The work is being conducted two weeks after a bicyclist got her tire stuck in a rut between the road surface and rail and was flipped over her handlebars and onto the road. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries. Workers from Massachusetts Bay Railroad Co., which runs the commuter rail service for the MBTA, came out that day to make temporary repairs but soon afterward agreed that an entire remake was needed for the crossing. The repairs to the crossing started on Wednesday at 12 a.m. and lasted until about 3:30 p.m. While the work was originally planned to …

Downtown Crossing to Get Fix This Week

The angled railroad crossing in downtown Hamilton has caused at least two bicycle crashes this summer. It will now be repaired.

The railroad crossing in downtown Hamilton will be repaired this week, starting Wednesday, to eliminate the danger to bicyclists. The angled crossing has caused at least two bicycle cashes in recent weeks, including one last weekend where a Beverly woman was flipped over her handlebars when her bicycle tire got caught in a gap between a ail and the road pavement. The work will begin on Wednesday morning, Sept. 19, Hamilton Police Lt. Scott Janes said in a written news release. The work will again continue on Friday, Sept. 21. The work hours each day will be 12 a.m. through 12 p.m. A variable message board has also been put up at the crossing to alert drivers to the upcoming construction. One lane on Bay Road (Route 1A) will be closed …

I had a crash at this location on 2/1/12 resulting in a broken right femur and shoulder separation. I didn't realize that my plight was shared by so many others. Why does it take so long for this sort of problem to be addressed? It's great that this is getting addressed! Bob Smallman, Wenham   more ›
