National Grid Says It Is Ready for Approaching Snowstorm

The heavy, wet snow predicted for this weekend's snowstorm could pull down trees and wires and cause power outages, and National Grid says it is ready.

National Grid said Friday that it is ready for a forecasted snowstorm this weekend that could include heavy, wet snow that could cause power outages. The company said it was preparing for the possibility of scattered power outages. And while the path of the storm was being monitored, crew assignments were being developed and equipment readied in anticipation of harsh weather. “Our storm preparation started in earnest several days ago so we could make sure we are in the best position possible to respond quickly and safely to potential outages that may occur as a result of this storm,” said Kathy Lyford, vice president, New England Operations said in an announcement issued by the company on Friday. “We are continuing to monitor the track and…

Midday Gusts to 60 mph Could Cause Power Outages, Downed Trees

Strong winds gusts are forecasted for midday Friday along with a storm moving through the area that was a blizzard in the midwest.

Strong, gusty winds may cause power outages on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. In an urgent weather message on Thursday afternoon, the weather service said that the highest risk for strong winds and power outages would be along the coast of Massachusetts, including the North Shore. The chance of high winds also prompted the weather service to issue a high wind watch that runs from late Thursday night through Friday afternoon. The winds are expected to blow at 30 to 40 miles per hour with gusts up to 60 miles per hour, with the strongest gusts between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday. "Winds of this magnitude could down trees and powerlines, leading to power outages,” the weather service said when it issue the wind advisory…

Upgrades Could Help Cut Number, Length of Power Outages

National Grid on Thursday is unveiling an $11 million dollar project to upgrade service on Cape Ann and the North Shore that will benefit customers in Hamilton and Wenham.

National Grid will announce Thursday a $11 million dollar electrical infrastructure improvement project it says will improve service reliability in Hamilton and Wenham. The company is upgrading 15 miles of underground cable systems that will add capacity to its distribution system as well as add redundancy to its system that it says will help in the event of a power outage. The improvements will also add reliability to service in Essex, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Rockport. “A top priority at National Grid is to provide safe and reliable service to customers and businesses in the communities we serve,” said Marcy Reed, president of National Grid in Massachusetts in the company's written announcement of the work. “Continuous …

National Grid Activates 'Emergency Response System' for Second Time in 10 Days

National Grid said it is ready to go with more than 500 crews in the event of power outages from Wednesday night's Nor'Easter.

National Grid, the electric utility that had hundreds of thousands of customers without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy including more than 1,000 in Hamilton and Wenham, said it is ready for Wednesday night’s Nor’Easter. The latest storm first moved in on Wednesday morning and is expected to last into Thursday with high winds, heavy rain and some heavy wet snow to the west and north. National Grid said it is ready to respond to any power outages that may occur as a result of the weather. There are more than 500 line and tree crews available and ready to respond to any storm-related outages, plus more than 200 “wires-down” personnel. That includes both National Grid crews and those from other companies that are assisting National …

Nor'easter's Wind and Rain May Affect Wednesday Evening Commute

Expect mostly rain from Wednesday's Nor'Easter on the North Shore and snow outside of Route 495.

A nor'easter will kick up winds and rain in the region today, with sleet and snow likely north and west of Hamilton and Wenham and in the higher elevations. According to WHDH meteorologist Chris Lambert, the precipitation should start between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., which would impact the afternoon commute. Atmospheric conditions may convert falling rain into snow in Hamilton and Wenham, though that would mean merely a dusting on grass before quickly melting away. The actual rain/snow line is harder to predict. "I don't expect much, if any accumulation in the Boston area, maybe a slushy coating around Rte. 128 on grassy surfaces as rain and snow battle it out for a few hours in the early evening," wrote Lambert on the 7 Weather Blog. "The snow …

Storm Leaves Scattered Outages, A Few Inches of Snow

The fall Nor'Easter that hit the two towns over the weekend left a handful of home without electricity.

Less than 2 percent of electric customers in Hamilton and Wenham were without power just before sunrise on Sunday. A rare pre-Halloween Nor’Eastern with rain, snow and wind swept through the area on Saturday night that ended by leaving about 2-1/2 inches of snow on the ground. National Grid said there were scattered power outages in both towns affecting 74 households out of the combined 4,589 customers with both towns. The 36 customers without power in Wenham – most of them in the Lord’s Hill neighborhood off of Route 97 – were expected to have their power back by 6:30 a.m. In Hamilton, the outages were most scattered and no estimate was offered for when power would be restored. The storm did cause some small problems with downed trees and…

Many Local Homes Remain 'Dark' on a Sunny Day

Hundreds of homes remained without power on Monday afternoon as National Grid crews continued to work to restore power after Tropical Storm Irene hit on Sunday.

Under bright sunny skies on Monday afternoon, several hundred homes in Hamilton and Wenham were still “dark.” National Grid crews were still working to restore electric service to about 600 homes in the two towns. About 100 homes had power restored since Monday morning. As of 2 p.m., the largest outage remained along Highland Street from Asbury Street to Nancy’s Corner at Cutler Road in Hamilton.  Power in that area went out last night and no exact estimate was available about when it would be restored. Local emergency responders were told that while there has been steady progress in restoring power, it might be a several days before everyone in the two towns gets their power back. Other areas without power and the number of affected …
