Five Things to Know Today in Hamilton and Wenham: Aug. 7

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

Today is Tuesday, Aug. 7. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Gem: One Boston meteorologist said Tuesday would be “a gem,” based on the weather forecast. Based on what we have heard of the forecast, we’d have to agree. Skies will be sunny and the temperature will get to about 80 degrees. 2. Patton Estate: The Patton Family Gift Committee meets bright and early on Tuesday morning (7:30 a.m.) at Hamilton Town Hall to go over the gift agreement and the closing, among other issues on its agenda, for the gift of the Patton estate to the town of Hamilton. 3. Town May Have Struck Septic Fill 'Gold' on Patton Land

The Patton Family Gift Advisory Committee is both excited and cautious about opportunities for the 27-acre Patton tract presents for Hamilton.

Hamilton Selectman Jennifer Scuteri may feel a bit like a Beverly Hillbilly. Instead of striking oil in the Tennessee hills, Scuteri and other members of the Patton Family Gift Advisory Committee have been recently told that under the tall hill on the Patton property there is a large amount of septic fill gravel. Removing the septic fill gold from the property (just plain wrong); 3-4 more sports fields (I guess there are never enough); a full-time live-in caretaker; a bed & breakfast....Honestly, I have visions of another boondoggle in the making (think EMT/Police/Ambulance/Public Safety Building minus 1 town), …   more ›

Patton Committee Begins to Take Shape; What's the Best Use?

Seven of the 10 members of the Patton Family Gift Advisory Committee were named on Monday.

The future of the Patton estate in Hamilton will begin to be decided in coming weeks by a group of 10 citizens that will make a recommendation to Town Meeting in May. Joanne Patton announced in December that she is donating her Asbury Street estate to the town. Town Meeting voters will need to vote to accept the gift and a committee has been named to determine how the town can best use the property. This week, seven of the committee members were officially named and the Hamilton Board of Selectmen said eight community members have expressed interest in filling the three at-large spots on the committee. “We are receiving a lot of interest,” said Jennifer Scuteri, chairman of the Hamilton Board of Selectmen. The deadline to express interest …

An interpretive museum depicting the historical significance of the home, the connection to the Patton family, their contribution to history and to the community would be great. Here, you have a home, encapsulated in which is the material historical culture of arguably the most famous military family in the United States (Not to mention Joanne Pattons own family contributions, the Holbrooks). Of …   more ›
