The short-staffed Hamilton-Wenham wrestling team got two pins from Kendrick Poulin but fell to 0-5 with losses to Saugus-Winthrop, Salem and Everett as they hosted a quad-meet on Saturday.
Hamilton-Wenham head wrestling coach Dave Pinette said it best when he admitted "it's hard to get wins when you are only wrestling seven guys," but even though the Generals lost all three matches at a quad-meet on Saturday, the team showed a fighting spirit that should bode well for personal successes this season. "We have a small squad this year but we can do some damage if everybody has the right attitude," said senior Kendrick Poulin, who earned two wins by pin in the 152 pound weight-class after missing the team's last match due to an injury. The Generals started the day with an 18-36 showing against a deep Saugus-Winthrop team. The first two wrestlers to take the mat, Andrew MacGregor (130 pounds) and sophomore Matt Chigas (171), were…

The Hamilton-Wenham wrestling team was fighting an uphill battle as it took on Wilmington with an injury depleted line-up on Thursday at home.
The Hamilton-Wenham wrestling team got off to a strong start as it hosted Wilmington (3-1, 1-1) on Thursday, but was unable to overcome the visiting Wildcats who took away a 16-4 victory that included two first period pins. The Generals (0-2, 0-2) were able to win the first match of the day, as Morgan Muschamp jumped out to an 8-1 first period lead en-route to a 16-5 decision over Wilmington's Jeff Goossens at the 152 pound weight-class. Muschamp controlled the tempo of the match, taking Goossens to the mat four times, earning two near-falls and a two-point reversal. Goossens nearly turned the tables in the early stages of the second period though, earning a near-fall, but Muschamp avoided the potential pin. "[Morgan] wrestled really well…

Hamilton resident Pat Rich - well known for his success in road races on the North Shore and beyond in recent years - recently claimed the course record in the Essex Lions Club Turkey Trot.
The Essex Lions Club Turkey Trot is one of the more challenging road races on the North Shore, with a mile-and-a-half hill that starts around Apple Street. Recently, Hamilton resident Patrick Rich took on the challenge and came away with a first place finish in 25:39 - a new course record. "I was hoping to improve on my best time on the Turkey Trot course," said Rich, who ran the 8K race in 25:45 in 2006. "I knew I would have to run faster than 5:11 per mile to do that. I felt like I started pretty strong, but I was 5:18 for the flat first mile and it gets pretty hilly after that." "I ran another 5:18 for the second mile, but didn't panic or abandon my goal and I went through the third mile in just around five flat," continued Rich. "I was…

Pingree Highlanders football team capped a undefeated season by coming back from being down 21-6 at halftime, to the Red Wings of the River School by blocking a last second field-goal attempt and bringing back the recovered ball 84 yards.
Gillette Stadium has seen its fair share of momentous football action; it is after all the home of the three time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. But last weekend the Pingree Highlanders football team topped its season off by making some history of its own there. The team mounted a fourth quarter comeback against the Rivers School in the New England Preparatory School's Class-C Norm Walker Bowl, which included three unanswered touchdowns. As if this late rally weren't enough to solidify this contest as possibly the best high school football game of the year, the Highlanders earned the game winning touchdown by blocking a Rivers field-goal attempt from the 10-yard line, recovering the loose ball, and returning it 84 yards with …

On Nov. 26, the Pacione Family will host the third Annual Reunion Run to benefit the Gabriel Pacione Memorial Fund, in honor of their son who passed away in 2008. The event features a one mile family-fun run and a more competitive 5K cross-country race.
As part of a Hamilton-Wenham cross-country program that has been nothing short of excellent, Gabriel Pacione was one of the brightest stars. "Gabe was a tough athlete and tough competitor," says head track Coach Steve Sawyer. "He left a legacy at Hamilton-Wenham that will never be forgotten." Gabe's list of accomplishments is breathtaking: Eight time Cape Ann League All-Star, four time CAL Athlete/Runner of the Year, six time CAL Open Champion, six time Eastern MA Division 4 Champion and two time All-State Cross-Country Champion. All of this while racking up nine Hamilton-Wenham running records, including a blistering 14:03 (4:54/mile) on the Generals tough 2.85 mile course. His teams benefitted from his success and thrived along with him…

The Pingree girls’ soccer team had a short lived run in the New England Class C Tournament, as they fell 2-0 to the girls from the Wheeler School in Providence, R.I. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The Pingree girls' soccer team entered the New England Class C tournament as the sixth seed on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The team's first challenge came in the form of the number three seed team from the Wheeler School in Providence, R.I. The Lady Highlanders, who finished second place in the Eastern Independent League with an 11-1 record (11-3-1 overall), were able to stay competitive with the Warriors throughout the first half, taking a scoreless tie into the break. The tempo of the game wore down the Pingree girls though, as Wheeler was able to notch two second half goals and come away with the 2-0 quarterfinal victory. "In the end their stamina outlasted ours," said head coach Beth Savarese. Savarese lauded the play of senior midfielders Ari…

The Pingree School girls’ soccer team earned the sixth seed in the upcoming New England Class C Tournament and will face off against third seeded Wheeler School in Rhode Island on Wednesday, Nov. 17.
The Pingree School's girls' soccer team takes its 11-1 record in the Eastern Independent League of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference into postseason play with a quarterfinal match-up against the Wheeler School in Rhode Island on Wednesday, Nov. 17. "We played Wheeler halfway through the season and lost to them at home 0-2," said head coach Beth Savarese, "but we are optimistic in our second chance." The Lady Highlanders (11-3-1 overall) were second in the EIL, behind the Windsor School (11-0-2) who beat Pingree 3-1 this season. Pingree will rely heavily on the consistent play of senior captain Ariana Twomeny of Boxford, who posted nine goals and eight assists this year. "[Ari] has been a star on the team for the past four …

The Hamilton-Wenham cross-country teams both ran away with first place in their Division 5 Eastern Massachusetts cross-country championships on Saturday at Franklin Park in Boston.
The wins just keep coming in for the Cape Ann League Champion Hamilton-Wenham cross-country teams, as both the boys and girls squads claimed the first place trophies at the MIAA Eastern Massachusetts Divisional Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Franklin Park in Boston. "Both of our teams ran very, very well," said head coach Steve Sawyer. "The boys ran in a nice pack; and with the girls we wanted to see how many could get in the top 15 and we got six, which is pretty good. They all ran confident and we are all happy. " Leading the way for the girls was CAL Runner of the Year, senior Alison Lanois, who took first place overall with a time of 19:11. The Lady Generals accrued only 42 points, followed by Weston (60), Coyle & …
