Wenham Quickly Follows Suit, Lifts Evening Activity Ban Too

The ban on publicly organized evening activities in Wenham was been lifted ion Thursday afternoon.

Wenham made the same move on Thursday as Hamilton had done a day earlier – the Board of Health lifted its evening activity ban. The lifting on the ban was announced in a Connect-CTY phone and e-mail message at about 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The ban on publicly organized outdoor activities in Wenham between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. had been in place since Oct. 1 because of concern about mosquito-borne illness such as West Nile Virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. The Hamilton Board of Health met on Wednesday night and voted 3-0 to lift the ban, noting that temperatures below freezing on Oct. 13 had significantly lowered the threat of disease from mosquitoes because of a reduced population. The Wenham Board of Health had been scheduled to meet on …

Town Manager: Not Cold Enough To Consider Lifting Activity Ban

The temperatures did not drop low enough for long enough on Saturday morning for a deep freeze.

Saturday morning's temperatures dipped to 29 degrees, not cold enough for the Boards of Health to consider lifting the evening organized activity ban in both. "It never reached 28," Town Manager Michael Lombardo said on Saturday. It needed to drop to 28 degrees or lower for four hours or longer for a hard freeze, he said. A hard freeze was needed to lift the ban. Earlier this month, the Boards of Health in both towns put in place an organized activity ban from 5 p.m. through 8 a.m. because of the threat of Eastern equine encephalitis. On Thursday, WHDH-TV meteorologist Pete Bouchard told Hamilton-Wenham Patch that there was a good chance of a hard freeze on Saturday morning. But Lombardo said National Weather Service records indicate that …

Chilly Temps Could Lift Activity Ban

It will be below freezing on Saturday morning, with temperatures possibly cold enough for long enough to kill mosquitoes and lift the evening activity ban in Hamilton and Wenham

Temperatures could get low enough early Saturday morning to kill most mosquitoes and lift the outdoor organized activity ban that is in place from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. “It’s a high possibility of a freeze,” said Pete Bouchard, meteorologist at WHDH-TV in Boston. Bouchard said it should get as low as 26 or 27 degrees in Hamilton and Wenham on Saturday morning. It will be below freezing for several hours, Bouchard said. The two towns are just far enough from the coast to get the temperature below freezing. For example, along Route 127 and right on the coast from Swampscott to Manchester-by-the-Sea, temperatures may only get down to 30 to 31 degrees. “Just a few miles inland it should get cold,” he said. “It will be cold – a real shot in the arm…

West Nile Found in Mosquito Near Chebacco Lake, More Spraying Planned

The Hamilton Board of Health announced on Friday that another mosquito tested positive for West Nile Virus and another round of spraying will be conducted.

West Nile Virus has again been found in a mosquito in Hamilton, again on the east end of town. Health Agent Leslie Whalen said on Friday that the positive test means that officials plan to again spray next week. “We chose Wednesday because it looks like it could be too cold on Monday or Tuesday,” she said. Spraying can not be conducted when it is raining or is below 60 degrees. The spraying will occur along Essex Street and roads east of Essex Street between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Thursday, she said. It will be the fourth time that spraying has been conducted this summer and fall in Hamilton. Here are some safety tips for residents in the area planned to be sprayed: • People with asthma and/or other respiratory conditions may wish to stay …

No West Nile Found So Hamilton Won't Spray for Mosquitoes

Hamilton decided at a recent Board of Health meeting not to spray for mosquitoes based on the lack of a positive testing for the West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

The Hamilton Board of Health decided last week not to spray for mosquitoes because no mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Ensephalitis, according to Nancy Stevens, administrative assistant to Health Agent Leslie Whelan Earlier this month, a mosquito in Wenham tested positive for West Nile Virus near Iron Rail. Four days after the positive test, the Northeast Mosquito Control District came to Wenham and sprayed in the area of Iron Rail. And earlier this month a mosquito also tested positive for West Nile Virus in Ipswich. Symptons of West Nile Virus include a fever, headache, body aches and possibly a rash. It can last from a few days to as long as a few weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control …
