Chemicals will again be sprayed on Thursday night in a portion of Hamilton to kill mosquitoes, as the town’s threat level for mosquito-borne illnesses remains at the highest level - “critical.” On Monday, the Hamilton Board of Health voted to ban all organized outdoor activities on both public and private property from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. until the threat level drops or there is a hard frost. The move to enact the outdoor activities ban came after a horse in Essex tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis last weekend. Since Hamilton borders Essex, has similar habitat and had a mosquito test positive for EEE earlier this summer, the threat level was raised to the highest level – critical – by the state Department of Public Health. The Hamilton Board of Health announced on Friday that another mosquito tested positive for West Nile Virus and another round of spraying will be conducted.
West Nile Virus has again been found in a mosquito in Hamilton, again on the east end of town. Health Agent Leslie Whalen said on Friday that the positive test means that officials plan to again spray next week. “We chose Wednesday because it looks like it could be too cold on Monday or Tuesday,” she said. Spraying can not be conducted when it is raining or is below 60 degrees. The spraying will occur along Essex Street and roads east of Essex Street between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Thursday, she said. A mosquito tested positive for the West Nile Virus over the weekend in Wenham and spraying is planned for Thursday night.
For the first time this summer, a mosquito in Wenham has tested positive for West Nile Virus. Based on the positive test, the Wenham Board of Health has asked the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District to conduct spraying on Thursday night. The spraying is being done in what Health Agent Greg Bernard calls a “targeted area” between 7:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. “The targeted areas will begin at the intersection of Larch Row and Grapevine Road and continue along Grapevine Road, including Gordon College, to the town line,” Bernard said in announcing the spraying on Wednesday afternoon. “The Iron Rail Property, consisting of the DPW garage and playing fields will also be included in the targeted spray.” The spraying …

The Hamilton Board of Health decided last week not to spray for mosquitoes because no mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Ensephalitis, according to Nancy Stevens, administrative assistant to Health Agent Leslie Whelan Earlier this month, a mosquito in Wenham tested positive for West Nile Virus near Iron Rail. Four days after the positive test, the Northeast Mosquito Control District came to Wenham and sprayed in the area of Iron Rail. And earlier this month a mosquito also tested positive for West Nile Virus in Ipswich. Symptons of West Nile Virus include a fever, headache, body aches and possibly a rash.
