Town Officials: Make Sure Black Barrels are Close to the Curb

The town-issued black trash barrels need to be placed close to the street so that the trash truck can pick it up.

The town-issued trash barrels need to be close enough to the street so that the trash truck can pick it up, town officials in Hamilton and Wenham are reminding residents. “I can’t emphasize enough that your black automated bin needs to be in proximity to the curb so that the arm can grab it and tip the trash," Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo recently told Selectmen. “If it is up in your driveway we would not be able to pick it up.” Black barrels are picked up each week in Wenham and every other week in Hamilton. This week, black barrels are being picked up in Hamilton - Wednesday through Friday. Last week, Wenham officials issued a reminder that the bins needs to be close to the street and away from other bins and other items. "In …

New Trash Plan To Launch in Early April, $1 'Small Bag' to be Sold in Hamilton

The new trash collection plan in the two towns is about a month away from a complete rollout, with now a choice of either a small or large bag for sale for extra trash in Hamilton.

The new trash collection program will kick off during the first week of April, Hamilton Selectmen were told on Monday night. The new trash and organics bins for every residence in the two towns were recently ordered. At one time, a mid-March launch date had been targeted to put the new bins to use. But to eliminate any possible last-minute snafus caused by delays in delivery and distribution, the program will roll out in April. “It’s looking like the first week of April it will launch,” Town Manager Michael Lombardo told the Board of Selectmen. The new program will introduce weekly curbside organics and single-stream recycling collection for every household in Hamilton and Wenham. In Wenham, weekly trash collection of one barrel will …

Another $67K in Local Aid Headed to Two Towns

A supplemental state budget signed into law last week will send $67,000 to Hamilton and Wenham in additional local aid money.

Hamilton and Wenham will be getting, combined, nearly $70,000 in additional state money from a $169 million supplemental budget passed last week. State Rep. Brad Hill, R-Ipswich, said the fiscal 2011 Final Deficiency Supplemental Budget includes $65 million in one-time money to cities and towns and, within that, is $41,088 for Hamilton town government and $26,196 for Wenham. The payments are known as “reversion money.” The supplemental budget was signed by Gov. Deval Patrick last Thursday. “At a time when local aid was cut, it was imperative that any excess revenue collected by the Commonwealth go back to our cities and towns,” said Hill in a written announcement. “In addition, it is my hope that this will allow our communities to take …

Newest Trash Plan is a 'Very Workable Solution'

The newest plan to handle trash in the two towns was called a compromise by Hamilton Selectmen on Monday night.

The newest plan designed to reduce trash collection costs and increase recycling was hailed Monday night by several Hamilton Selectmen as a excellent compromise. But some residents say they want the issue to go to a town vote and a former Selectman says the success of the plan is falsely predicated on the expectations that the recycling rate will double. Jennifer Scuteri, chairman of the Hamilton Board of Selectmen, said the town’s tax rate needs to be controlled and doing things the same way will not help control taxes. The latest plan will enhance services, lower costs and “moderate the (tax) increase significantly.” Several months ago town leaders in both Hamilton and Wenham began discussing the possibility of going to a pay-as-you-…

Chainsaws and Pumps: Towns Prepare for Possible 'Irene' Impact

Officials in Hamilton and Wenham have begun preparing for the possible impact from Hurricane Irene this weekend.

Preparations for Hurricane Irene are underway in both Hamilton and Wenham with forecasts calling for the possibility she could be the first hurricane to make landfall in New England in 20 years this weekend. In Hamilton, Town Manager Michael Lombardo said on Thursday he had already met with Police Chief Russell Stevens, Assistant Fire Chief Kirby Brand, Schools Superintendent Peter Gray and Department of Public Works Director John Tomasz to discuss storm preparations. Officials had been making sure chainsaws and pumps were all in working order and were keeping an eye on the storm track. “It is still a long way away,” Lombardo said midday on Thursday. Based on current forecasts, Lombardo said he expects the extent of the issues in Hamilton …

Towns Moving Closer to Same Day Town Meetings [POLL]

Members of the Boards of Selectmen from both Hamilton and Wenham this week considered the pros and cons of holding Town Meetings for both towns on the same day.

Town leaders from both Hamilton and Wenham are considering whether or not to schedule both Town Meetings on the same day this fall. Members of the Boards of Selectmen from both towns said they think on merit it is a good idea at a joint Selectmen's meeting held at the Hamilton-Wenham Library. “There are some joint articles that would benefit having the meetings simultaneously,” said Molly Martins, chairman of the Wenham Board of Selectman. Jennifer Scuteri, chairman of the Hamilton Board of Selectman, agreed and asked other selectmen if it was possible to decide in time for this Fall’s Special Town Meeting. “Our bylaw sets our date for the third Saturday in October,” said Scuteri. Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo confirmed the Town …
