Storm Prompts Hamilton Parking Ban

On-street parking will be banned for 12 hours on Tuesday in Hamilton.

No parking will be allowed on Hamilton streets for the first half of Tuesday because of a forecasted snowstorm. A winter storm parking ban has enacted in Hamilton for midnight through noon on Tuesday. The announcement was made through a Connect-CTY phone and e-mail message from Town Manager Michael Lombardo at 5:20 p.m. on Monday. The ban means that on-street parking is banned all over town, except by Fire Department, Police Department, Department of Public Works and "other public safety and public utility repair vehicles." Additionally, "vehicles shall not be parked in such a way as to interfere or impede such efforts," according to Lombardo's message. Violators face a $20 fine and could have their vehicle towed at their expense. "Please …

Hamilton Parking Ban Enacted for Thursday Night

A parking ban is in place in Hamilton on Thursday night, starting at 10 p.m.

An on-street parking ban goes into place at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Town Manager Michael Lombardo announced on Thursday evening. The announcement was made at about 5:30 p.m. via a Connect-CTY phone and e-mail message. The ban will run from 10 p.m. on Thursday to 6 a.m. on Friday. It is the second time that a townwide parking ban has been enacted since Town Meeting voters approved changing the winter parking rules in October 2011 to a bylaw that bans on-street parking in the winter only when a parking ban is announced based on a forecast for 4 inches or more of snow. "No vehicle shall be parked or positioned in such a manner as to interfere with the snow removal or sanding operations," the announcement said. The ban means that on-street …

'Most Important Contract' is Under Consideration

The Board of Selectmen are negotiating a new contract with Town Manager Michale Lombardo, whose contract ends in April.

Town Manager Michael Lombardo's contract expires in April, and the Board of Selectmen have begun discussion on reaching a new agreement with him "Personally, I look forward to the discussions and will keep the town's best interests in mind at all times," Board of Selectmen Chairman David Neill told Patch. The board sent him a letter, as required by Lombardo's contract, expressing the board desire to enter into negotiations toward the renewal of his current contract, Neill said. Lombardo replied back to the board expressing a desire to renew his contract. The issue is on the agenda for Monday night's Board of Selectmen meeting at Hamilton Town Hall and has been listed on the agenda for many the past few weeks. Neill said because the …

Playground Effort Reaches Goal, Construction Planned for Spring

The fundraising effort for a new playground at Patton Park has reached its goal, and some of the old equipment may get a second life at the playground in School Street in Hamilton.

The effort to build a new playground at Patton Park has blown past its initial goal and now has a March groundbreaking in sight. Already, most of the existing equipment, except for the swings, have been removed from Patton Park. Town Manager Michael Lombardo said that the old equipment has been brought back to the Department of Public Works to be rehabilitated and if it is still usable it will be installed at the park on School Street, which right now has two slides, a few swings and a picnic table. "We've had some requests from some citizens in that area," Lombardo recently told the Board of Selectmen. The effort to build a new playground at Patton Park began nearly two years ago. Billy Boardman, one of the co-chairmen of the Friends of …

Lombardo Gets 'Solid B' in Annual Review

The Hamilton Board of Selectmen publicly presented Town Manager Michael Lombardo with his annual review on Monday night.

Hamilton Town Manager Michael Lombardo, now into year three in his position, was given a "solid B" in his annual review by the Board of Selectmen on Monday night. Lombardo was given a 3.07 on a scale of 0-4.33, using a numerical ranking similar to those used in schools to calculate a grade point average. He was evaluated on 23 different things, ranging from his job as personnel director to his implementation of the trash program. His highest score came from his job to both manage legal counsel and close the landfill. His lowest score came for his work to manage information technologies - specific concern centered on the town website. A sheet listing the average score was distributed to the Board of Selectmen and members of the audience on …

Brewer Reappointment as Town Counsel Gets Backing from Selectmen

Hamilton Town Counsel Donna Brewer's reappointment was been supported by the Board of Selectmen in a 3-2 vote on Monday night.

Town Manager Michael Lombardo narrowly received support from the Board of Selectmen on Monday for his decision to reappoint Town Counsel Donna Brewer. Brewer, who has served as the town's attorney since 1998, is reappointed each year. And two years ago, she actually told the town she did not want to be reappointed. But at that time, as Lombardo was coming on board as the town’s first town manager, she was asked to stay on board to help with the transition. Brewer’s reappointment became a hotly contested topic in recent weeks after the release of the so-called Urbelis report earlier this year. The report, by Boston attorney Thomas Urbelis, faulted Brewer’s handling of advice to the Board of Selectmen in 2007 as it went into several closed-…

"MISTAKES WERE MADE"... was the argument used by those Selectmen who supported the reappointment of attorney Donna Brewer as town counsel for Hamilton. The word "mistake" implies that the actions taken were accidental…or not deliberate. To the contrary, any reasonable person who read the Urblelis Report would conclude that the actions taken by Ms. Brewer were carefully thought out and deliberate…   more ›

Sidewalks to Get Up Close Look in Selectmen's Walking Tour

The Hamilton Board of Selectmen plan a walk to look at the width - and condition - of some of the town's sidewalks.

Hamilton Selectmen will take a walk around downtown this summer to take a look at sidewalks in the area. Voters at Annual Town Meeting in May approved spending $50,000 on improvements to sidewalks in town. Nearly half the 16 miles of sidewalks in Hamilton are in poor or fair condition, according to Department of Public Works Director John Tomasz. On Monday at Hamilton Town Hall, Tomasz asked Selectmen for guidance in spending that money. In particular, he asked the board to come up with a standard width for any of the repaired sidewalks. “Some decisions need to be made about what we want to do,” Tomasz said. Selectmen said it was hard to visualize the difference in the widths and agreed that it would be best to go out and look at the …

Spend the $50,000 on our rancid water supply. Everyone has great water, but Hamilton ? We are surrounded by ponds, lakes, watersheds and rivers. It's been raining for days and with all our technology we cannot retain water ? Imagine all the state and federal matching grant money we could get ? That is if Hamilton, like other cities and towns who have a great Town Solicitor and Staff to accomplish…   more ›

Selectmen Chairman Says Town Counsel Decision Does Not Rest With Board

As town residents push the Board of Selectmen to address the issue of whether to reappoint town counsel Donna Brewer, the town manager and chairman of the Board of Selectmen says state law gives the town manager total control to name the town attorney.

The power to appoint the town counsel sits solely with Town Manager Michael Lombardo. And that’s why the Board of Selectmen, after hearing from residents two weeks in a row pushing for the board to address the issue, is not taking up the topic of whether Donna Brewer should continue as town counsel, according to Board Chairman David Neill. She is eligible for reappointment yearly on July 1 and Lombardo decided to keep her on board. Neill said typically he prefers to addresses issues head-on at Board of Selectmen meetings. “With this, we don’t have the authority to make the decision,” Neill said in comments following Monday night’s meeting. Neill, who was most recently elected in May and immediately named chairman, was also a selectman in …

The community has had enough with the political adjendas and should up and show the distrust and anger towards people who are trying to prevent a recovery from the past years of poor management and acts by town workers. Residents Push to Have Hamilton Town Attorney Replaced

A letter signed by 20 Hamilton residents was brought to the Board of Selectmen on Monday night, asking that Town Counsel not be reappointed and that legal services be put out to bid.

A group of Hamilton residents asked the Board of Selectmen on Monday night to not reappoint the town’s attorney, Donna Brewer. North Street resident Jay Burnham read a two-page letter to the board – signed by a total of 20 residents – “and supported by many others,” Burnham said. “As a result of her actions, Attorney Brewer has forfeited the trust, respect and confidence of the community and appropriately, she should be terminated as Town Counsel,” the letter stated. A complete copy of the letter is attached to this story as a PDF. Burnham said that the so-called Urbelis report, prepared nearly three years ago to determine Brewer’s role in police department problems at the time – but publicly released last month – “determined that Ms. …

New Playground to Take Patton Park 'To the Next Level'

Fundraising is well underway for a new playground at Patton Park that will not only offer newer play structures for children but could help bring some new customers to downtown businesses.

A new Patton Park playground – which in addition to providing fun for children may also may work as an economic development tool for downtown Hamilton – is getting closer to reality. The Friends of Patton Park group says they have raised $70,000 toward the effort and have commitments for $90,000. At Hamilton Annual Town Meeting in May, voters approved spending $5,000 in town government money toward the project. The plan to install new equipment at the park recently received an OK from the Planning Board, which “wholeheartedly endorsed” the proposal as part of the site plan review process. The plan will also go before the Hamilton Zoning Board of Appeals on July 11. The plan does not outline the specific equipment that will be installed or …

The unfortunate truth is that little ones have to use the "potty" often and the facilities at the park are terrible. I wish that some focus would be placed on the restrooms. I realize that it would be an expensive project but it would make the park much more user friendly and enjoyable.   more ›
