An off-duty Hamilton police sergeant shot a Beverly police officer because of "his perception of a relationship" between the Beverly officer and his wife, investigators announced on Thursday.
Essex County prosecutors said Thursday that Hamilton Police Sg. Ken Nagy shot Beverly Police Officer Jason Lantych "because of his perception of a relationship between Lantych and his wife." The investigation into the Feb. 24 shooting outside the Starbucks in North Beverly has been concluded and found, besides the shooting, that no other criminal action occurred. A summary of the investigation was included in a five-page letter sent to Hamilton Police Chief Russell Stevens and Beverly Police Chief Mark Ray on Thursday. It is attached to this story as a PDF. Lantych was shot twice - once in the wrist and once in the leg - by Nagy outside the coffee shop just before 6 p.m. on the Friday night back in February. Lantych was seriously injured …

Several witnesses recall the scene immediately after a shooting outside a Starbucks in North Beverly on Friday night, allegedly by Hamilton Police Sgt. Kenneth Nagy, who authorities said later committed suicide near the scene.
A witness to Friday night’s shooting in North Beverly – allegedly by off-duty Hamilton Police Sgt. Kenneth Nagy – heard two loud bangs in front of Starbucks at the time of the shooting, he told New England Cable News. “It was definitely not normal – like somebody dropping a package or a box or something,” Ricky Graf told NECN. Graf also said that some customers were trapped inside the Starbucks for two hours while police investigated. “It looked like he was bleeding from his groin area,” one witness, who was not identified, told WCVB-TV. Hours after the shooting, which seriously injured Beverly Police Officer Jason Lantych, some bloody clothes were still visible on the front steps of the coffee shop, as were some blood stains on the cement…

I am still haunted by this entire tragic event. I believe a beautiful family going through very normal family growing pains and changes was tragicly affected by the negative effects of an antidepressant never taken before by the usually very rational assailant. Detective Nagy was always professional in his well established role as detective and the perfect example of the loving father to his two …   more ›
