State Fines National Grid Millions for Failed Storm Responses

National Grid was fined nearly $19 million, the highest fine levied against utilities in Massachusetts for its response to two storms in 2011.

The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011, including $19 million for National Grid, the company that serves Hamilton and Wenham. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners on Tuesday to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said.  National Grid faces the steepest penalty, at $18.725 million. 'After-Action Report' to Look Back at Sandy Response in Hamilton

Town leaders in Hamilton will look back at the response to Hurricane Sandy in an "after-action report"

Town leaders in Hamilton will take a hard look back at the response to Hurricane Sandy and come up with an “after-action report,” according to Town Manager Michael Lombardo. Lombardo told the Board of Selectmen earlier this week that the storm was “more problematic and difficult” to deal with than a wintertime snowstorm. Lombardo said he expects to share the report with agencies such as the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and National Grid, the power company that serves the town. The report will look at the things that wee helpful during the storm response and things that did not go as expected. The most significant impact townwide was power outages, which started on Sunday night, Oct. 28 and lasted until Thursday, Nov. 1. There …

Hamilton Mom Hopes to Help Sandy Victims Who Helped Her on Sept. 11

The caring of Red Cross volunteers in the days following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks have not been forgotten by a Hamilton woman, who has packed a van with supplies for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

A Hamilton mother is on the road to the New York City borough of Queens on Thursday morning to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. For Martha Hale Farrell, it is her way to help after rescue workers and American Red Cross volunteers were so caring and helpful to her after the loss of her sister in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Her sister, Maile Hale, worked in Cambridge and was attending a two-day conference at the Windows on the World restaurant at the top of the World Trade Center when terrorists struck it in 2001. A month after the attacks – Hale remembers it like it was yesterday – she was attending a memorial service at Ground Zero. As she was leaving, she needed directions to the family center and found some Red Cross …

Letter to the Editor: Does the Decision to Postpone Trick-or-Treat Scare You?

A Wenham father asks whether the decision to postpone Trick-or-Treat scares you.

To the Editor: I'm scared. Really scared. Halloween is here! Be careful of the ghouls, goblins and ghosts out there! But I'm not scared about that. I'm really scared about the direction our towns are headed in, based on their decision hours ago to "postpone" Halloween. It's outrageous, uncalled for, and insulting to our collective common sense. First things first. I feel for all of you out there without power, in harm's way and inconvenienced by the power outage or downed lines in your street. As a tight-knit community, I think most of us know someone who has been affected by the storm, and, most likely we all have offered help. Now that that's out the way, lets dig a little deeper here, and, well, vent. Page, Heidi and Michelle Bailey …

National Grid President Marcy Reed said Wednesday that the comapny is ahead of schedule in its effort to restore power and said the company will continue to work out kinks with the newly-created community liaison position.

National Grid is head of schedule in its effort to restore power following widespread outages following Hurricane Sandy, according to company President Marcy Reed. Reed, speaking to reporters in a conference call from a Chelmsford parking lot on Wednesday afternoon, said the company’s estimated restoration times were based on having three-quarters of its customers restored by Thursday night. “We are already there,” she said. “We are progressing ahead of schedule.” As of 2 p.m. on Wednesday, 78 percent of the 237,000 National Grid customers that were without power statewide had been restored. In Hamilton, as of 3 p.m., 20 percent of the town – or 620 customers - remained without power. In Wenham, 12 percent of the town, or 185 customers did…
