To the Editor: Hamilton is fortunate to have good, qualified people running for the office of Selectman this year. For several years, as a member of the Joint Library Committee, I worked closely with Scott Maddern during the planning and construction of the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library. Scott Maddern was the chairman of this vast, multifaceted and unprecedented project that required unique and exceptional diplomatic skills. Throughout all the difficult negotiations I found Scott to be a cool-headed, fair-minded and far-sighted leader with a sense of humor and always a gentleman. These same skills will serve well for the office of Selectman. The Hamilton-Wenham Public Library is still the only two-town library in the Commonwealth of …

Hamilton Withholding, Hoping to Renegotiate Library Fees

Hamilton pays an additional 10 percent to cover the administrative fees for Wenham to run the Hamilton-Wenham Library but wants to lower that number.

Hamilton officials feel the 10 percent administrative fee that is paid for Wenham to administer the Hamilton-Wenham Library is too high and are working to renegotiate it. "We feel it is not justified at the high rate," said Town Manager Michael Lombardo. The fee amounts to about $50,000 per year, Lombardo said. That's essentially the salary of a full-time employee but Wenham has not hired a Town Hall employee to administer the finance, insurance and human resources functions of the library, he said. At issue is the so-called "indirect costs," and not the pay or operating cost for the library. When the two towns runs a combined department, one town takes the lead and charges the other town a 10 percent fee to cover the "indirect costs" with…

The statement that a salary of a full-time employee at the library is $50,000 is sadly not correct. None of the full time professional librarians at the Hamilton-Wenham Library, except for the library director, earns more than $40,000 a year. The salary of full-time masters degree holding professional librarian, many of which have worked there for over 4 years, is about $36,000 a year. The …   more ›
