Snow on School Roofs Has Not Reached Dangerous Depths

Snow accumulation of school roofs has not approached the amount that was on roofs in 2011.

The snow that piled up on school roofs after the weekend blizzard was not deep enough to prompt safety concerns, according to School Superintendent Dr. Michael Harvey. Several parents, residents and students asked Hamilton-Wenham Patch whether the blizzard would prompt the need to shovel and snowblow the school roofs in the same way that was done in Febraury 2011. Harvey said that he checked with both the Hamilton building inspector and Hamilton Fire Department and was told that snow removal from school roofs is not needed after the weekend blizzard. "The Hamilton Fire Department and the building inspector have told us that we do not need to clear the roofs," Harvey said. "I think the high winds took most of the snow off of them." Almost …

School Budget Would Rise 10 Percent with 'Level Services'

School Superintendent Michael Harvey unveiled the cost of a so-called "level services budget" on Thursday night to the School Committee.

The fiscal 2014 Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District budget would require 10 percent more money from each town if services were to remain the same as offered this year, Superintendent Michael Harvey said on Thursday night. The gap has little to do with increased spending – the same level of services next year will cost $247,873, or .9 percent, more in fiscal 2014 than fiscal 2013, which ends on June 30, 2012. Harvey called that "actually good." The gap can be traced mostly to one-time revenue in the 2013 budget that is not currently part of the 2014 budget. The 2013 budget uses $1.49 million from the district’s excess and deficiency, or E  and D fund, which is essentially a savings account made up of previous year’s fund balances, plus…

We all know that not all of the 125 recommendations will work for the HWRSD but it has to be seriously analyzed again! Want to see an interestsing fact.... go onto the boston.com website snapshot and check out "costs per student". If you take the …   more ›

Schools' Business Manager Leaving, Will Not Be Replaced

Business Manager Pola Andrews is leaving Hamilton-Wenham to take a similar position in Saugus, where she lives, and will not be replaced.

The business manager for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District is leaving after taking a similar position in Saugus. The Daily Item of Lynn reported last Friday that Pola Andrews has been hired as the Executive Director of Finance and Operations for the Saugus School District. Andrews had been the business manager for the regional school district in Hamilton-Wenham. Superintendent Michael Harvey told Hamilton-Wenham Patch on Wednesday that he is “not inclined to re-fill the position.” “Since we already have an Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance (Peter Gray), I do not see the need for another 'executive-level' position in the business office,” he said. In June 2011, Andrews had her hours increased from 30 to 40 hours …

So sorry to hear that Pola will be leaving HWRSD. She did and excellent job sorting out the mess left by the audit company that Marinel and the former school committee had on board for 27 years. And Kudos’ to new Superintendent Michael Harvey for recognizing that we do not need 2 assistant Superintendent AND a business manager. Now Peter Gray can concentrate on the job he was originally hired to …   more ›
