New Playground Headed for Spring Groundbreaking, Fundraising Two-Thirds Complete

The new playground at Patton Park is one step closer to reality after earning approval from the Zoning Board and continues it fundraising, working toward a spring groundbreaking.

The project to build a new playground at Patton Park is about two-thirds of its way toward its fundraising goal. The Friends of Patton Park group is hoping to raise $150,000 to build a new playground at the Hamilton park, and plans to break-ground on the project next spring. So far, $97,000 has been raised toward the project, according to Holly Regan of the Friends group. If fundraising goes as scheduled, Regan said the project would be put out to bid this fall and construction would begin, weather-permitting, in the spring. And this week, the Hamilton Zoning Board of Adjustment released a decision granting its approval for the installation of new playground equipment. “The new playground is going to go in the same footprint of the …

Patton Lights Given OK to Stay on Until 10 p.m.

The Hamilton Zoning Board of Appeals has said it is OK for the lights at Patton Park to stay on until 10 p.m. starting this summer.

The lights at Patton Park can now stay on until 10 p.m. That’s the decision from the Hamilton Zoning Board of Appeals after the Recreation Department sought to extent the time the lights can stay on from 9:15 to 10 p.m. The decision was made by the board earlier this month, but a final written decision was not issued until Tuesday. In its decision, the board said its review of new light hours was based on a prior agreement to review the hours a year after the lights were replaced and expanded in late 2010 and early 2011. Police Chief Russell Stevens told the board that there had been no problems under the lights now and did not expect problems if the lights were to remain on until 10 p.m. A complete copy of the two-page ZBA decision is …

Patton Parks Lights Could Stay on Until 10 p.m. [POLL]

The lights over the basketball and tennis courts at Patton Park could stay on until 10 p.m. if the zoning board grants a permit.

The lights at Patton Park could stay on until 10 p.m. to allow tennis and basketball games to go later on summer evenings under a plan that’s looking for zoning approval on Wednesday. The proposal to extend the end time of the lights from 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. will go before the Hamilton Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday night at Hamilton Town Hall. The board meets at 7 p.m. It has the support of Hamilton-Wenham Recreation Commission and Hamilton Board of Selectmen. Just recently, a feature was added to the lights – which were installed last year – above the tennis courts and basketball court to allow them to be controlled by anyone who shows up to play. Recreation Director Sean Timmons said anyone can press a button on the Asbury Street…

Letter to the Editor: 'Voices Can Be Heard and Changes Can Be Made'

Hamilton resident Nancy Littlehale says her voice was heard at Hamilton Town Meeting and urges support for the effort to raise money to buy new playground equipment at Patton Park.

To the Editor: I recently attended the Special Town Meeting in Hamilton in support of my friends' enthusiastic Patton Park Playground initiative and to vote in favor of the town of Hamilton to allocate existing funds towards the building of a new playground. My friends, Emily Sumner and Holly Regan, have been volunteering their time to improve the playground at Patton Park, a beautiful park at the epicenter of our town. They have created a thoughtful and thorough campaign of what the playground at Patton Park could be - complete with age appropriate play structures, safe surfaces, picnic tables, benches, and gardens. These improvements will create a destination for everyone - not just children - in our community to enjoy all the while, …

New Rec Director Settles In; Enjoys 'Family-Like Feel'

Sean Timmons began Monday as the new director of the Hamilton-Wenham Recreation Department.

The new director of the Hamilton-Wenham Recreation Department brings a youthful energy to a job that he says has a “family-like feel.” Sean Timmons’ first day on the job at the helm of the two-town Recreation Department was Monday. “The main thing that attracted me is the size of the community,” Timmons said. In his short time in Hamilton and Wenham, Timmons said he noticed the “community aspect” to the recreation offerings and said many people seem to make it a point to be involved. “You don’t find that in too many places,” he said during an interview in the recreation office next to Hamilton-Wenham Library. Timmons had been the recreation director in Wakefield since 2003. While the job was full-time in the summer, it was part-time during…
