Return of Historic Features Being Considered for Downtown Hamilton

Community Preservation Act money could be used to recreate historic features in downtown Hamilton.

Several vestiges of history could be returning to downtown Hamilton if voters OK a plan to use Community Preservation Act money to install benches, gas lanterns and plant trees. “There is really a lot of history in Hamilton that someone who is newer to town would have no idea about,” said Selectman Jeff Hubbard, who has been pushing the plan to return some of the features of the downtown that were commonplace 100 years ago. This week, Hubbard presented a plan to the full Board of Selectmen outlining the plan to install gas lanterns, install benches, plant trees and install an archway (similar to the one at the Hamilton-Wenham Library) highlighting the pedestrian walkway that connects the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing to the area between …

Congratulations on your new appointment, David. I'm sure that you will find that Hamilton residents are proud of their town, and rightfully so. It's a lovely town with beautiful open spaces and good, friendly people. Reading is a well-managed town, and though my role was very small, I am forever grateful for the opportunity that I had to assist in the planning for the Common in Reading.   more ›

From the late 1940's until the mid 1980's the store was owned and run by Wes and Jesse Chadder I think it was named Wenham Market but to the locals it was called Chadder's.   more ›

Michelle is partially correct. The building is no longer there. After housing the Enon handtub it eventually became the Water Dept building and later was moved to the Wenham Museum. I think at some point in it's history the building also was home to a Veterans' organization.   more ›

'Then and Now' was Stubbs' Ship Portrait

This week's "Then and Now" image was W.P. Stubbs ship portrait that hangs at Hamilton Town Hall.

The latest "Then and Now" historical photo feature is a painting of “The Big Bonanza” by W.P. Stubbs. The painting hangs at Hamilton Town Hall, as shown in the accompanying photo. The painting of a three-masted ship is from about 1890. The daughter of the ship’s captain, Collins Ingalls Andrews, lived in Hamilton on Bay Road. Reader Sarah Blanding was the only person to guess and she was correct. Congratulations Sarah. There's a new historical photo posted every Tuesday. Check the site next Tuesday for the latest one. Special thanks to Arthur "Butch" Crosbie and the Hamilton Historical Society and the Wenham Museum for providing the photos we use for this feature. Plus, if you have a picture that was taken somewhere it Hamilton and …

I must confess that I had some inside knowledge about this piece. It is currently hanging, not in the Hamilton Historical Society, but at All Allies Fine Art Restoration in downtown Hamilton where it is being restored for the Historical Society. The painting had over a century's worth of dirt and grime on its surface as well as two prominent rips. I've added photos which show the painting during …   more ›
