Gordon College President D. Michael Lindsay is taking a "contrarian approach" to graduation, he writes in his latest column for Huffington Post.
Colleges may be doing their graduates a disservice by trying to come up with the perfect graduation speaker, according to Gordon College President D. Michael Lindsay. In his latest column for the Huffington Post, Lindsay said in the two years since he became president at Gordon he has though a lot about why the college celebrates commencement. The college can invite a "high-profile speaker" that can add cachet to the event or maybe offer "a rich, memorable message to the graduating class." But most of those speakers come as a cost, and most have notoriety. Gordon College's new President, D. Michael Lindsay, joined other North Shore college president in addressing the North Shore Business Expo on Tuesday.
Gordon College students have spent more than 2,000 volunteer hours cataloguing and documenting the Patton family archives, President D. Michael Lindsay told member of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon earlier this week. A video of Lindsay's entire speech can be seen on YouTube. Lindsay joined other North Shore college presidents, including those from Salem State University and Merrimack College, at the event at CoCo Keys Hotel and Resort. When complete, Lindsay said more than 80,000 photos, documents and other materials from the family of Gen. George S. Patton will be available for research and to the public. A stake from a tent set up for Friday's inauguration of new Gordon College President D. Michael Lindsay ruptured a gas line that was not discovered until Saturday when the tent was being taken down.
A ruptured gas line in the Quad at Gordon College on Saturday afternoon required a dormitory and four academic buildings to be evacuated. There were no injuries or damage reported. The 4-inch diameter line in front of the Ken Olsen Science Center was ruptured when the stake from a tent being set up for Friday afternoon’s inauguration festivities. But the ruptured line was not discovered until Saturday afternoon when the tent was being taken down. Dr. D. Michael Lindsay is installed as Gordon College's eighth president on Friday and lays out a three-pronged strategy called the "Gordon Commission."
On a clear blue-sky day, Dr. D. Michael Lindsay became the eighth president of Gordon College in Wenham on Friday. Nearly 500 people were in attendance at the outdoor installation ceremony on the campus quad. Trumpets and a wind ensemble heralded the processional. The long list of guest speakers included sixth president of Gordon College Dr. Richard F. Gross and seventh president of Gordon College and Lindsay's predecessor, Dr. R. Judson Carlberg. Lindsay's colleagues and peers that were seated next to him on stage each spoke about the mission of Christian colleges and universities living outside of a “me” generation. Gordon College President D. Michael Lindsay was inagurated on Friday afternoon, becoming the college's eighth presidnet. Lindsay comes to the Chrsitian liberal arts college in Wenham from Rice University, where he was a sociology professor. Lindsay, who officially began on the job this past summer, tookover for R. Judson Carlberg, who retired last year after working at the college for 35 years, including his last 19 years as president.
