Typically, less than 4 percent of students are absent at the high school but it got close to 10 percent earlier this month.
The absentee rate at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School rose to 9.4 percent earlier this month - more than double the usual rate. The increase was largely attributed to the elevated cases of influenza this year, said the Hamilton Board of Health. So far, 12 cases of flu have been formally reported in Hamilton, according to the Board of Health. The age of those with the flu have ranged from 4 months old to 82, with five cases in children under age 8 and one over age 65. Townwide, cases have been up, according to health officials. The last two flu season were very light. In early January, the absentee rate at the high school was 8.7 percent for the first week back from the holiday vacation and then rose to 9.4 percent for the week of Jan. …

A limited supply flu vaccine clinic will be open to public on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. until noon.
Beverly Hospital is running a limited supply flu vaccine clinic on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon. The hospital, a member of Lahey Health which has medical offices in Hamilton, said it is offering the clinic in response to the recent rise in the number of influenza cases. The flu clinic will be held in the main entrance of Beverly Hospital. The clinic is open to members of the public ages 18-64. You do not need to be a Beverly Hospital patient to receive a flu vaccine. Following are some helpful tips to consider before attending the flu clinic: Due to a limited supply of flu vaccine, only 200 shots will be administered at the clinic. Due a shipping issue, the flu clinic at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester will not take place on…

Local doctor's offices still have flu vaccine available for what is the worst flu season in at least four years.
Cases of influenza in Hamilton have gone from one case at this time last year to 9 cases this year, according to the town's public health nurse, Kim Paskalis. And at Beverly Hospital, there's been more patients with flu so far this year than at this point of any of the past four flu seasons. The trend in Hamilton mirrors the trend across the state and nationwide. In Boston, for example, Mayor Thomas Menino declared a health emergency on Wednesday due to Boston's flu outbreak. A total of 18 people have died from the flu statewide this year, including a child under 6 in Boston on Friday. There have been more than 700 reported cases in Boston - a city of 625,000 people- so far this flu season, according to the Boston Public Health Commission…

Here's where to get an influenza vaccine, how to recognize symptoms and what to know about treatment if you get sick.
Flu season is coming early in parts of the United States: This time last year, flu cases were lower in Danvers than they are now, according to data on Google's Flu Trends. While Danvers-specific data is not available, flu cases are up right now over the same time last year in the greater-Boston area, according to Google's Flu Trends. Overall in Massachusetts, activity is considered high now, while it was considered low at this time in 2011, according to Flu Trends. If you're considering getting a flu shot, there's one place in the two that offers the vaccine (besides your own doctor, of course): CVS Nearby, you can also get a flu shot at Rite Aid in either Beverly or Ipswich, CVS in North Beverly and Allen's Pharmacy in Manchester-by-the-…
