First Church's Duda to Receive Humanitarian Award

Rev. Mike Duda of the First Church in Wenham is slated to review the Red Cross Humanitarian Award at its Annual Community Heroes Breakfast in March.

Rev. Mike Duda of First Church in Wenham has been named one of American Red Cross of Northeast Massachusetts' two major award winners at its upcoming 2013 Heroes Breakfast. Duda, who lives in Rockport, has been awarded the 2013 Humanitarian of the Year award. Donald E. Kelley was also awarded the Enduring Hero Award for his work with Beverly Rotary Club, Beverly Bootstraps, Walk for Hospice of the North Shore and Greater Boston and North Shore Music Theatre. Both men will be honored in March at the Red Cross's Heroes Breakfast. Duda, the pastor at the First Church in Wenham, has always accepted everyone regardless of religion or politics, Red Cross said in its announcement on Wednesday. Early Winter: Thursday’s weather is looking like it will end up as a pretty typical early winter day – temperatures in the high 30s and close to 40 with sunny skies. Today is Thursday, Nov. 15. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham: 1. Repeat: Thursday’s weather will largely be a repeat of Wednesday – a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the 40s. 2. Flu Shots: The second of two flu shot clinics happens on Thursday at The Meetinghouse in Hamilton for residents of both towns. It runs from 3-6 p.m. and is open to all ages. The Boards of Health from both towns, which are sponsoring the clinic, recommend that people wear short sleeves or loose-fitting sleeves and bring your insurance card. 3. Three Local Scouts Join the 5 Percent to Become Eagle Scouts

Nationwide just 5 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve top rank of Eagle Scout. In Thomas Grimshaw, Keaton Holappa and Andrew Gauthier, Hamilton can boast of three in one year.

Last Sunday, Thomas Grimshaw, Keaton Holappa and Andrew Gauthier joined the ranks of Gerald Ford, Neil Armstrong, Steven Spielberg and Michael Moore. The three Hamilton residents and members of Wenham-based Boy Scout Troop 28 became Eagle Scouts. Fellow troop members, family and friends were at the ceremony known as the Eagle Court of Honor held at First Church in Wenham. To become an Eagle Scout is not a small undertaking. Many, if not most boys can claim to have at one time or another been a Cub Scout, but it is a select few that make it to scouting’s top rank. Becoming an Eagle Scout takes many years of steady commitment. Most who rise to the challenge are in their last year or two of high school when they earn their final merit badges…

Scouts is the only year round program for boys that teachers leadership, fraternity, and fun. Wenham's First Church Gets Fresh Coat of Paint

Two sides of the First Church in Wenham are getting a new coat of paint this spring.

The historic church that’s overlooked the center of town in Wenham for nearly 170 years is in the midst of getting of new coat of paint worth between $160,000 and $180,000, according to the Salem News. In addition to church services, the First Church in Wenham is often used for multi-denominational services, such as the one honoring the 10th anniversary of the Seot. 11 attacks last year, and musical performances. This year, the first phase of the project will repaint two sides of the church – facing Route 1A and Arbor Street – while the other two sides will be repainted next year, a church trustee told the paper. And forecasters are saying Tuesday is expected to be just as nice, with temperatures into the 60s with clouds and a slight chance of rain. 2. Winter Parking Ban: The overnight winter parking ban in Wenham begins on Tuesday. Vehicles are banned from parking on the street from midnight to 8 a.m. for longer than an hour between Nov. 15 and March 31, according to Wenham police. Violations come with a $15 fine. 3.
