Shorthanded Girls Basketball Overpowered By Pentucket, Push Toward Possible Postseason Berth

The Cape Ann League-leading Sachems jumped out early and cruised versus the Generals on Friday night.

When you have as many players in street clothes as you do in uniform obviously your prospects aren’t looking their best. And if that wasn’t daunting enough for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School girls basketball team Friday night, the Sachems of Pentucket, in their dark green uniforms, were staring down the home team. Pentucket is atop the Cape Ann League Div. 1 standings with a perfect 10-0 mark. And with the win the Sachems are now 14-4 overall. Despite the immense hurdles the Generals fought to the end in their 67-37 loss. Hamilton-Wenham is now 7-9. A team that comes into your gym sporting a 14-1 record most likely has earned that lofty status. The Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School boys basketball team was well aware of the numbers visiting North Andover has attained, and how they did it. But despite hanging with the Cape Ann League Div. 1 leaders for a little more than half of the game, the Scarlet Knights used their size and team mentality to wear down the Generals in a 71-58 victory for the visitors on Tuesday night. “They’re a smart basketball team and when they play as a team with lots of ball movement it opens up (passing) lanes for them,” said senior guard Stephen Tam, who finished with 15 points. “I think we came out flat in the second half. Boys Basketball Heads Into Season Reloading, Rebuilding

One of two starters for the 2011-12 Generals boys basketball team is hurt and the remaining eight seniors lack varsity experience for the two-time league champions.

After two straight Cape Ann League championships and the No. 1 seed in the Division 3 North sectionals, Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School boys basketball coach Doug Hoak is entering a year of uncertainty. First, he isn’t quite sure what he will have after his two returning starters: Stephen Tam and Jake Lindland. Next, one of the starters, Lindland, has been battling a stress fracture and it is unknown when he will be game ready, if at all. Finally, while he has 10 seniors who will suit up, only the starters come in with any significant varsity experience: one is out for basketball for the first time, two didn’t play basketball last year, one was on JV and one was hurt the past two seasons.
