Friday night's Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School Generals football game at Amesbury has been moved to Saturday afternoon.
The football Generals from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School were scheduled to play Friday night in Amesbury against Cape Ann League/Northeastern Conference Tier 3 opponent Amesbury. But last week, concerns about Eastern equine encephalitis in Amesbury elevated the threat level there to "critical." And that has prompted the evening football game to be rescheduled to Saturday at 1 p.m., according to the Hamilton-Wenham Athletics Twitter feed and a report in the Newburyport Daily News. Amesbury is one of six communities in the greater Newburyport area that has placed a ban on outdoor activities between 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. because of concerns about West Nile Virus and EEE. Other communities with some sort of ban include Merrimac, Newbury, …

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School football team had not lost a regular season game since early October in 2010 - nearly two years - before Saturday.
The Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School football team has been on quite a run - a streak of 16 straight regular season wins that dates back to Oct. 8, 2010. It included an undefeated regular season in 2011 that saw the team go to the Div. 3A Super Bowl before a heartbreaking loss to Bourne High School. But that streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon in West Newbury when the Generals lost to Pentucket High School 34-15, The Salem News reports. The Generals were up 7-6 at halftime after giving up a first quarter touchdown and then scoring their own, also in the first quarter. But it was the second half when the Sachems blew open the game behind runs of 7, 10 and 42 yards by Cody Rothwell, according to the Salem News. The Generals are …

Trevor Lyons scores four touchdowns and rushes for 262 yards in the Generals' 28-12 win over North Reading at home on Saturday.
North Reading coach Jeff Wall said his game plan coming into the game at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School on Saturday – a marquee match-up of top Cape Ann League Tier 4 teams – was to keep the Generals 1-2 punch of Trevor Lyons and Elliot Burr to the outside and then contain them with support. In his words “that didn’t work” as Lyons, the dynamic and lightning-quick quarterback, torched the Hornets defense for 262 yards on 22 carries and three of his four touchdowns on sweeps to the outside as the home team recorded a 28-12 victory. “We basically wanted to keep them outside … and stuff the middle,” said Wall, whose team fell to 5-3, 2-1 in the CAL. “That didn’t work as they got guys outside and took care of us (on blocks).” It very …

Elliot Burr's touchdown late in the fourth quarter tied the game before Trevor Lyons scored the decisive points in the extra session.
You only have one chance to do something monumental as a senior. And Hamilton-Wenham’s Elliot Burr was seconds from being remembered for something huge in his final season - in a negative way. But Burr, and his team, redeemed themselves. And in the process kept their hopes for a second straight playoff appearance alive. After his fumble midway through the third quarter was taken back by Tyler Palumbo for a Lynnfield touchdown to put the Generals in an 8-point hole, he came back to score and convert the two-point rush with 37 ticks remaining on the clock to tie the game. Hamilton-Wenham (7-0, 2-0 Cape Ann League/Northeastern Conference Tier 4) finished off the comeback when witha a score in the overtime period and stopped the Pioneers for a…

Sizing up this weekend's local football action. Last week: 3-1; season: 25-7.
Brao’s kick is up…..it’s good! Ask anyone from either Hamilton or Wenham and they will tell you it was the most exciting finish to one of the best high school football games at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in quite some time. Ask anyone from Lynnfield, which was the defending league champion at the time, and they might beg to differ. Nevertheless, almost a year after James Brao’s 27-yard field goal with 16 seconds left lifted the Generals to a 16-15 win over the visiting Pioneers and, more importantly, the Cape Ann League Small title, the two teams will meet in Lynnfield Saturday (11 a.m.). While the Generals have steamrolled their way to a perfect 6-0 mark and took their first step toward a return trip to the postseason with a …
