Broken Boiler Pipe Floods School Basement But Does Not Disrupt Classes

About a foot of water had to be pumped out of the basement at Buker Elementary School on Friday after a boiler pipe broke.

The school has three furnaces, so once the water was pumped out, the other two furnaces could be used, Blanchard said. “The other two boilers at the school were not affected and can provide sufficient heat to the building while the third is being repaired,” said Superintendent …

Voters Back Spending for Roofs, Other Elementary School Building Work

Questions 4 and 5 passed, both with about 63 percent support. on Tuesday's ballot.

Voters backed $2 million in capital improvements to the elementary schools in the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District on Tuesday. The projects, which include work ranging from the replacement of the roof on both Cutler Elementary School and Winthrop Elementary School to the installation of a fire suppression system at Buker Elementary School, will be paid through a Proposition 2-1/2 debt exclusion override. A debt exclusion override means that the payment on the bond for the project will be outside the taxing limits of Proposition 2-1/2. The Cutler project was Question 4 on Tuesday's ballot and the remaining capital work was Question 5. The Cutler project was separate because the School Committee expects to get as much as 43 percent …

New Traffic Pattern to Be Used Around Wenham Town Hall Polling Location

A new traffic flow in and out of Wenham Town Hall will be used during voting on Tuesday.

A new traffic pattern will be unveiled around Wenham Town Hall for Election Day on Tuesday. Elections were moved from Buker Elementary School to Town Hall in Wenham last year and Tuesday will be the first election with expected high turnout to be held at the Town Hall. In a Connect-CTY message sent out on Monday afternoon, Town Administrator Mark Andrews said that Wenham Police would be directing traffic from Friend Court into the Town Hall parking lot. From the parking lot, all traffic will then exit onto Main Street on the driveway next to Wenham Museum. The “Do Not Exit” sign that typically greets driver headed out to Route 1A on the driveway from the Town Hall parking lot will not be in effect on Tuesday. “The goal is to prevent …

School Roofs, Other Projects Go Before Wenham Voters Saturday Morning

Wenham's fall Special Town Meeting starts at 10 a.m.on Saturday in the gymnasium at Buker Elementary School.

Voters at Wenham Special Town Meeting on Saturday will take up two of the same questions Hamilton voters did two weeks ago - whether to put a Proposition 2-1/2 debt exclusion override on the November ballot. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium at Buker Elementary School. A quorum of 54 registered voters are needed to conduct business. A full copy of the Town Meeting warrant, with all six articles, is attached to this story as a PDF. The most significant items are Article 4 and Article 5, which both ask voters to send two Proposition 2-1/2 debt exclusion overrides before voters on the Nov. 6 ballot. Two weeks ago Hamilton Town Meeting voters nearly unanimously approved putting both measures on the ballot that would fund capital …

The other reason why people do not attend Town Meeting is not due to a lack of interest. Speaking of Bullying as in the other thread. When people speak their mind or disagree, they are often booed, criticized or ostracized. Usually, town officials, town or local public employees attend these meetings, because it is in their interest to do so in two ways. Their job security, their promotion …   more ›

Better look at our Water situation before we throw money into our school overrides ? What Jay Burnham stated on August 10th 2012 regarding our Water Supply. What lack of funding? 10 years of Proposition 2.5 overrides? Costing the taxpayers more than $45 million cumulatively over the past 12 years? That's not a lack of funding. That's a lack of accountability. We better think about bonds in order …   more ›

Pedestrian Safety to be Upped in Wenham Before School Opens

Wenham officials say they are increasing their focus on pedestrian and bicycling safety in town.

A program to increase pedestrian and bicyclist safety in Wenham in being unveiled this week – in advance of the opening of school. The plan involves repainting crosswalks, installing new signs and increasing police enforcement of traffic law. “This is a joint initiative between the highway department and police department,” Interim Police Chief Thomas Perkins told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night at Wenham Town Hall. The program is being dubbed “Operation Safety Net.” In addition to physical safety improvements, Perkins also noted that the only crossing guard for students headed to Buker Elementary School is on Perkins Street, a side street that connects Main Street to Porter Street and runs by the school. “That (crossing guard) …
