PHOTOS: Bike Races, Obstacle Course Gets Riders Ready for Summer at Buker

A day focused on bicycling on Wednesday at Buker Elementary School was designed to make it a "safe summer of cycling."

Giraffe Spots to Show Anti-Bullying Efforts

The new anti-bullying program is rolling at Buker, where the focus is on giraffes.

A large giraffe painted on the wall at the entrance to Buker Elementary School will show the school's progress to combat bullying - and focus on helpful and respectful behavior when students "stick out their neck." On Wednesday, students at the Wenham school were encouraged to "stick out their neck" like a giraffe. "We're going to try to fill our giraffe with your names on spots for sticking out your neck to help others," Kathy Hughes, the school's adjustment counselor told all of the school's students that sat on the gym floor. Students will be encouraged to "spot" behavior that shows students "sticking their neck out." Teachers also acted out some common schooltime scenarios, showing students what it means to stick out their neck. In one…

Crosswalk Where Boy was Hit Will Continue to Have Guard

A crosswalk on Arbor Street where a boy was hit by a car last summer will continue to have a crossing guard this school year.

A crosswalk on Arbor Street will continued to be staffed by a crossing guard at school opening and closing time. A boy was struck by a car and injured his leg along that section of Arbor Street last June. Since then, Superintendent Michael Harvey said parents and residents had expressed concern about safety in the area as students head to and from Buker Elementary School, which is around the corner on School Street. “There was a lot of concern about children crossing at that crosswalk without an adult there,” Harvey said. There has been a crossing guard at the crosswalk since the second week in September, Harvey said. Just recently, the position became open and the position has been advertised. Harvey said the plan is continue to staff and…

part of the issues is that due to the position of the lights to the cross walk a driver cant see the actual light when stopped...even when the light turns green most of the time you have to wait until someone beeps so you know its no longer red. Principal: 'Senseless Act of Violence Difficult to Understand'

A note to parents from the Buker Elementary School principal.

The following message was delivered to parents of Buker Elemenrary School students by Principal Brian O'Donoghue in the wake of Friday's school shooting in Connecticut. It is printed unedited and in its entirety. Dear Buker Families, The Buker School community is deeply saddened by the tragic school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Our thoughts and prayers are with their students, staff, and families. The loss of any life to a senseless act of violence is difficult to understand, but even more heartbreaking when the loss involves so many young children and caring adults working in an elementary school.  We work closely with the Wenham Police and Fire Departments to provide a safe school environment for our …
