How Was Your Trip to School on Monday?

Let us know how things went on Monday as Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District was one of only a few districts with school on Monday.

The decision to hold school on Monday in the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District elicited quite a bit of consternation on Sunday night by users of Hamilton-Wenham Patch. They were concerned for safety, citing unplowed sidewalks and bus stops, narrow roads and reduced sightlines from large snowbanks. Many other North Shore school districts - but not all - canceled school on Monday. Surrounding school districts including Beverly, Danvers, Ipswich and Manchester-Essex all canceled on Monday but were slated to return on Tuesday. How did things go for you? Tell us in the comments. Did you get to school OK? Was your bus stops cleared out? Was the sidewalk near school clear? Did the bus come on time? Did you find a spot in the school parking…

Hamilton Parking Ban Lifted

The parking ban lasted almost three days in Hamilton and was lifted on Monday morning.

The winter storm parking ban in Hamilton that had been in place since noon on Friday has been lifted. The announcement was made at 9:20 a.m. on Monday by Town Manager Michael Lombardo. Vehicles parked on the street were subject to a $15 ticket plus the cost of towing if they were on the street during the ban. Lombardo said that no tickets were handed out and no vehicles were towed during the ban, adding that "residents did a great job" getting vehicles off the roads. The weekend's parking ban was the first under the town's new wintertime parking ban that used technology such as Connect-CTY telephone calls and e-mails plus the town website and other means to disseminate information about the ban. It was not needed last winter at all because…

Trains to Boston to Resume on Monday, Use Caution at Station

The MBTA said that commuter rail service will return to normal on Monday morning.

The MBTA plans to resume commuter rail service on Monday, returning to normally scheduled trips after the service was shut down for two and a half days because of the blizzard. The T stopped running commuter rail trains to and from Hamilton-Wenham station at 3:30 p.m. on Friday as the blizzard approached. Service remained halted through Saturday and into Sunday. The T resumed some service - mostly subways - on Sunday. But commuter rail service systemwide remained shut down through Sunday. On Sunday at about 11 a.m., the T announced that regular service would resume at the start of service on Monday. The first train headed in to Boston from Hamilton-Wenham station leaves at 5:41 a.m. on Monday. And while trains plan to return to normal …

It's Official - Regional Schools to Open on Monday

School Superintendent Dr. Michael Harvey announced on Sunday evening that schools would definitely open as usual on Monday.

Streets, bus stops and the school grounds have all been plowed after the weekend blizzard and Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District schools will open on Monday, according to School Superintendent Dr. Michael Harvey. Hamilton-Wenham Patch reported earlier on Sunday that the plowing and snow removal was on track for schools to open. But at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, Harvey said in a Connect-CTY e-mail and phone message that schools would definitely be open on Monday. The school district’s bus contractor, Salter Bus Company, said it does not “anticipate any major difficulty in completing their bus runs in the morning,” he said. The Department of Public Works from both Hamilton and Wenham “have concluded their major snow removal operations,” …

I agree with you....but on the other hand I would say it isn't fair for the kids. They are the only school on the whole north shore that has to go to school tomorrow. Why shouldn't they get an extra day like everyone else who gets to go sledding tomorrow?   more ›

Snow Removal 'On Schedule' to Open Schools on Monday

Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District schools are likely to open on Monday, but a final decision has yet to be made.

Snow removal at the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District schools is on track to have all five schools open on Monday, according to Superintendent Dr. Michael Harvey. "We are on schedule with our cleaning activities to be open tomorrow," Harvey told Hamilton-Wenham Patch at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. Later, Harvey added that he is waiting to make a final decision until he hears from the Hamilton Department of Public Works and Wenham Highway Department about the progress of snow removal on side streets and around bus stops. Some North Shore schools have announced they will be closed on Monday, including public schools in Peabody, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott. But none of the school districts immediately bordering the two towns, …

T Will Not Run Trains on Sunday, Warn to Stay Off Tracks

Anyone headed to the Boston Celtics game on Sunday will not be able to take a train straight to the TD Garden since commuter rail trains will not run on Sunday.

Commuter rail service will not resume on Sunday as the MBTA continues to clear the tracks after the weekend blizzard and get equipment ready to hopefully get going again for the Monday morning commute. It means that anyone planning to head to the TD Garden on Sunday from Hamilton-Wenham station for the Boston Celtics game will have to drive or find another way to get there. Subway service and other modes of MBTA service will also not operate on Sunday. The MBTA says the train tracks through Hamilton and Wenham should not be used for cross-country skiing, showshoeing or walking since there is equipment on the tracks clearing snow and it is considered trespassing. In an alert issued on Sunday morning, the T said that "service will resume as …

Power Restored, Parking Ban Continues in Hamilton

Some homes lost power and the parking ban remains in place in Hamilton on Sunday but no major problems were reported from the Blizzard of 2013.

The driving ban helped avoid any major problems in Hamilton and Wenham during the blizzard on Friday and Saturday. "Everyone, for the most part, listened to the governor's warning," said Hamilton Police Lt. Scott Janes. Gov. Deval Patrick issued a driving ban by executive order at 4 p.m. on Friday. It ran until 4 p.m. on Saturday. For a time, Chebacco Road was blocked when a tree came down and brought power lines with it. "There were times when some of the roads were snowed in," Janes said on Saturday afternoon. "Right now all the secondary roads are passable but most will needed to be widened." The Department of Public Works was called when needed and addressed problem spots, Janes said. There were no car crashes reported in Hamilton. In …

Avoid a Roof Collapse: Clear Snow From Your Rooftop

Light, fluffy snow on rooftops can act as a sponge for rain, which is in the forecast for Monday. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency offers these tips.

With rain in the forecast for Hamilton and Wenham on Monday, the Blizzard of 2013 may not be finished wreaking havoc. While temperatures dropped overnight on Friday resulting in light, fluffy snow, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) warns that fluffy snow piled high on roofs can act as a sponge, absorbing rain and adding additional stress to structures. Relatively flat roofs are particularly vulnerable, MEMA says. In other cases, roof ice dams have formed causing water build-up, leading to interior damage. These conditions can accelerate the snowmelt. To minimize the risk of over-stressing a building roof due to accumulated or drifting snow: Information from a release by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA…
