Letter to the Editor: Mullen Invites Community to Hear About Penguin Hall Plans

Jim Mullen invites local residents to Penguin Hall on the former site of his advertising company's headquarters to hear about the plans to redevelop the property into a senior living complex.

To the Editor and residents of Wenham: After a three-year delay, I am ready to renew my quest to convert the 36 Essex St. home of my former advertising agency to a senior residential community. Sadly, my original partner, Deaconess Abundant Life, was badly hurt by the real estate trauma of 2008 and they have had to withdraw their interest. Recently, Deaconess architect Gerry Menke, of Newburyport’s EGA, introduced me to Chris Wise, a successful developer of six Wise Living retirement communities; all on Cape Cod, all beautiful, all well maintained and well managed. Chris and I are creating the Penguin Hall project together - he’ll do the development while I handle the marketing - so we are sensitive to the current real estate environment. …

Latest Plan for Mullen Property Calls for 238 Senior Units

Jim Mullen will be a partner in a new senior living complex on the site of the old Penguin Hall on the Mullen property in Wenham.

A Cape Cod developer wants to come to Wenham, converting and expanding the old Penguin Hall into an independent senior living complex consisting of up to 238 two-bedroom units. Chris Wise, owner of the development firm Wise Living that has built six similar complexes on Cape Cod and is building two more, would develop the complex in partnership with Jim Mullen. The Mullen advertising firm occupied the mansion and its 50-plus acres off Essex Street until it moved to Boston in mid-2009. Mullen still owns the property. Wise and Mullen, along with architects from EGA Architects, met early Tuesday to present preliminary plans for a new senior living complex that would open in 2014.
