A History of 'Costin's Curios'

A history of 300 Main St. in Wenham and Don Costin.

The following history of 300 at Main in Wenham and Don Costin was written by Jack Hauck of Hamilton. Author's note: I interviewed Donald Costin outside the stores at 300 Main St. We had some coffee and chatted at one of the outdoor tables. Many people came and went during our interview and everybody said hello to Don. Don is always dressed to perfection. You will see in the photo he is wearing a confederate jacket. Don bought this jacket on one of his trips to Gettysburg. He had it special ordered because he wanted four pockets like his vests. The buttons each have CSA on the them, standing for Confederate States of America. He also owns a blue union jacket with eagles on the buttons. The all-day "Harvest in the Marketplace" event on Saturday will show off Hamilton and Wenham's downtown.

On Saturday, there wil be dozens of reasons to spend all day downtown. The Hamilton-Wenham Merchants group is sponsoring its inaugural Harvest in the Village event from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. In addition to downtown businesses, there will be 46 vendors lining 300 at Main in Wenham and Railroad Avenue in Hamilton, pretty much from the Wenham town line to Patton Park. The Henderson’s Café will have a new manager and some menu changes when it reopens on Wednesday after a week’s worth of renovations. The breakfast and lunch spot in the 300 at Main plaza in Wenham has been closed since last Wednesday. The new manager, Nick Katsoulis, plans to reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Katsoulis takes over for Robin Green, who ran the café for about four years. She will now work at nearby 15 Walnut. “She told me she could no longer operate the business because business was down,” said owner Don Costin, adding that she asked to “bow out.” Costin said he had interest from five different people. Katsoulis was the first to express interest, about a year ago, when Costin and Katsoulis were introduced through a mutual friend…
