Saturday morning may have started out gloomy, but hundreds of Hamilton and Wenham youth certainly didn't notice. Children from 40 teams spread over five different leagues took to the streets, in the annual Hamilton-Wenham Little League Opening Day parade. The kids traversed more than one mile, starting from the Buker Elementary School onto Perkins Street, down Main Street, left onto Railroad Avenue and finishing on Union Street. The procession was led by fire engines and police cruisers from both towns and antique cars. The ceremony - emceed by Hamilton-Wenham Little League President Len Dolan - on the crisp looking, beautifully manicured field began with a baton twirling routine by Winthrop Elementary School third-grader Samantha Bucci (…

Patton Parks Lights Could Stay on Until 10 p.m. [POLL]

The lights over the basketball and tennis courts at Patton Park could stay on until 10 p.m. if the zoning board grants a permit.

The lights at Patton Park could stay on until 10 p.m. to allow tennis and basketball games to go later on summer evenings under a plan that’s looking for zoning approval on Wednesday. The proposal to extend the end time of the lights from 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. will go before the Hamilton Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday night at Hamilton Town Hall. The board meets at 7 p.m. It has the support of Hamilton-Wenham Recreation Commission and Hamilton Board of Selectmen. Just recently, a feature was added to the lights – which were installed last year – above the tennis courts and basketball court to allow them to be controlled by anyone who shows up to play. Recreation Director Sean Timmons said anyone can press a button on the Asbury Street…

I think it's great to give the teenagers a safe place to go to play games a little longer in the summer. Keep them out of mischief.   more ›

Girls Tennis Looking to Better Its 2011 Finish

Four players return this year from the high school girls' tennis team that had a Div. 3 North run that ended with a semifinal loss in 2011.

After the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School girls' tennis team advanced to the Div. 3 North semifinals last season, coach Claudia Hawks said, “Being in the semis of states was icing on the cake.” Now the Generals boast its Nos. 1 and 3 singles players from last year back for another season, as well as both players from the No. 2 doubles team. The expectations are high and the outlook positive. Senior Charlotte Horton leads the way as the top singles player on the team, and possibly in the Cape Ann League. She will serve as co-captain with Carson Smiley. Sophomore Caroline Gribbell, who played at No. 3 singles in 2011, also returns. Horton finished with an overall record of 9-8; Gribbell, who missed some time during the campaign, may …

Native Returns to Lead Baseball Team Into New Season

The 2012 edition of the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School Generals baseball team is sprinkled with experience as well as young and hungry new faces.

Reggie Maidment may be new to the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School varsity baseball team as a first-year head coach. But he is in no way new to the school. He replaces longtime leader Doug Hoak, who retired last year, but Maidment has been an assistant with the football team for three years and the baseball junior varsity coach for two years. He also taught at the high school for one year. And as a native of Hamilton who starred for the Generals in the early 2000s in football, basketball and baseball, there shouldn’t be an issue with Maidment knowing the history of the team and the league. “It’s great to be able to give back, and to follow Doug, who was a role model for me, makes it (better),” said Maidment. “I was born and raised in …

Agawam Mite A's Take Valley League Championship in Overtime Win

Agawam Mite A Youth Hockey Team ended a successful season on Saturday with a league championship win over top-ranked Stoneham.

The Agawam Mite A Youth Hockey Team traveled to the Malden Ice Palace Saturday morning to battle league rival Stoneham to decide the League Championship.  Stoneham entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed while the Chiefs were the No. 3 seed. As was the case for their previous five contests, the game was hotly contested.  Stoneham opened the scoring early in the first period, while Agawam countered with a top shelf wrist shot off the stick of Luc Moruzzi and a nifty breakaway goal from high scoring centerman Jimmy Ayers. The game went back and forth from there with no team having more than a one goal lead. Agawam struck two more times in regulation, including a gorgeous tip-in goal by Ayers off a Jack Erdmann shot from outside the faceoff …

Seniors Ready to Step in to Defend Boys' Tennis CAL Small Title

The high school boys' tennis team has new batch of upperclassmen ready to take over for last year's graduates.

The good thing for a boys' tennis program like the one at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School is that there are so many top-notch players that usually the varsity squad is littered with upperclassmen. The downside for players who probably could be playing singles at another school is they have to wait their turn. But that also gives them the incentive to prove their worth when the opportunity affords it. The Generals once again will be upperclassmen-heavy this spring, with three seniors who played varsity on last year’s Cape Ann League Small championship squad. “We definitely have a lot of seniors this year. It will be good,” said coach Joe Maher, who is in his 14th season at the helm. “The funny thing is of the seniors only three of them…
