School Committee: 'Secret Negotiations' Helped Avoid Budget 'Food Fight'

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School Committee ratified the fiscal 2013 budget number that was approved by Hamilton Town Meeting on Saturday.

The Hamilton-Wenham School Committee voted 7-1 Tuesday night to OK the 2013 budget that was approved by the Hamilton Town Meeting on Saturday The decision, though, came after a lengthy discussion on how "secret negotiations" before the meeting avoided what member Larry Swartz called “a war” that might have broken out in the high school auditorium. Several current and former members of the School Committee criticized the negotiations by three members – Chairman Alexa McCloughan, Vice Chairman Roger Kuebel and Swartz – which were kept from the other committee members prior to Saturday's Annual Town Meeting in Hamilton. However, most critics also said that the result of the "secret negotiations" was good for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional …

The infamous Marchand case needs to become this town's (sordid) past or we as a town will never heal. It showed a very ugly side of Hamilton that hurt our trust in town police and town boards. Something positive did result however, it uncovered wrongdoing and publicly showed the awful actions by some individuals of our town government. Those people (with exception of town attorney Donna MacKenna …   more ›

Police Intern Helps Improve Safety on Two Hamilton Roads

An intern from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School has spent recent months learning about all aspects of a town police department - along with coming up with two safety improvements on two main roads in town.

Safety improvements will be coming to Bay and Chebacco roads thanks to the work of a high school intern at the Hamilton Police Department. Zach Bird, a senior at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, is the department’s second intern in recent years. Bird, who participated in last year’s Citizens Police Academy, is interested in a career in law enforcement and reached out to Chief Russell Stevens about the possibility of an internship with the department. After meeting with school officials and Bird’s parents, Bird came on board as an intern. Stevens says he holds high standards for interns – he expected Bird to dress professionally in a shirt and tie each day, keep a daily journal and write a reflection paper at the end. Bird wrapped up …

Letter to the Editor: School Choice Story Can't be Proven or Disproven

Hamilton resident and former School Committee member Richard Boroff writes to say that an article about school choice in the recent edition of the Hamilton-Wenham Free Press can not be proven or disproven.

To the Editor: Having just finished reading the May 2012 issue of the "Hamilton-Wenham Free Press," the article on school choice on page 5 by Julianna Kallas was fascinating. "Out of the Blue" Mary's father gets a solicitation call from the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District to get him to consider sending her to the district as a choice student. Wow! How did the district get his name? How did the district know he was considering Pingree School? Sure as shootin' Pingree didn't tell the district! What about the rest of the supposed conversation; did this all happen? Did something happen? And when did it happen - recently or 20 years ago? What might have happened? There are many scenarios, but lets take one. Mary is talking with a …
