Watch 'Quiz Show' Finals, Get Some Plants and Run a 5K This Weekend

Today is Friday, May 18. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Hamilton DPW Yard: The yard at the Hamilton Department of Public Works is open to the public once a month – the third Saturday of the month – for drop-offs of electronics and other large items for a fee. This month’s drop off day is this Saturday, May 19. The yard is open from 8 a.m.-noon. 2. Tour de Cure: Keep an eye out on Sunday for hundreds of bicyclists on the roads around Hamilton and Wenham (and many other North Shore communities) as bicyclists take on tours of 15, 31, 62 or 100-miles in a non-competitive ride to benefit the American Diabetes Association. Sunny Streak: Forecasters are saying that Thursday will start a streak of beautiful days of weather that will take us straight through the weekend. Thursday’s temperatures will be around 70 and temperatures will get closer to 80 by the weekend. 2. Reducing Toxins: There was an event originally scheduled for Thursday evening at Hamilton-Wenham Library that planned to offer ideas to reduce toxins in the home. Today is Tuesday, May 15. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Rain: After the driest and warmest start to spring in recent memory, we’ve now got ourselves stuck in a somewhat wet rut. Granted, last weekend was beautiful, but Tuesday’s forecast calls for a cloudy day with rain more likely after noontime with temperatures in the 60s. 2. School Budget: On Saturday at Hamilton Annual Town Meeting, voters approved funding for a school budget that is less than the budget approved by the School Committee. That means the School Committee is meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Center School to consider approving a new budget, which amounts to about $420,000 less than it approved headed in to the Town Meetings in both towns. 3. HWCam Executive Director Bill Melville said that a Federal Communications Commission rule that allows another channel to have rights to channel 10, HWCam will go to channel 8 on June 5. Hamilton resident and former School Committee member Richard Boroff writes to say that an article about school choice in the recent edition of the Hamilton-Wenham Free Press can not be proven or disproven.

To the Editor: Having just finished reading the May 2012 issue of the "Hamilton-Wenham Free Press," the article on school choice on page 5 by Julianna Kallas was fascinating. "Out of the Blue" Mary's father gets a solicitation call from the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District to get him to consider sending her to the district as a choice student. Wow! How did the district get his name? How did the district know he was considering Pingree School? Sure as shootin' Pingree didn't tell the district! What about the rest of the supposed conversation; did this all happen? Did something happen? And when did it happen - recently or 20 years ago? What might have happened? Today is Friday, May 11. Here are five things you need to know: 1. Parent Survey: Friday is the final day for parents to fill out an online survey that asks for opinions about parent involvement in the schools. Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District was selected as one of the districts in the state to participate in the survey, run by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. If more than 17 percent of parents participate, the school district is eligible for a small grant. The survey takes between three and 10 minutes to complete and will help increase parental involvement in the schools. 2.
