Wenham's Laurie Stephens is set to make her third appearance in the Paralympics next month in Sochi.
Stephens, 29, was selected Friday to represent the U.S. Born with spina bifida, she started skiing at age 12 when a disabled group went to Loon Mountain in New Hampshire. She turned to racing at about 15, joining Chris Devlin-Young's New England Disabled Ski Team. She is a 2002 graduate of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School and now lives in Aspen, CO.
In 2004, she was the overall and giant slalom world cup champion as a rookie. The following year, she won races in every discipline. She earned two gold medals at the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games and a silver in Vancouver in 2010. She was named the USOC’s Paralympic SportsWoman of the Year in 2006 and was a 2006 ESPY Award nominee for Best Female Athlete with a Disability.
The Paralympic Winter Games kick off on March 7 and continue through March 16.
