VIDEO: Girls Hoops Drops Season Opener to Lynnfield By 2 Points

The Hamilton-Wenham girls varsity basketball team came up short in their first game of the season, a 52-50 loss to Lynnfield at home.

The girls basketball Generals spent most of their season-opening game against Lynnfield behind by one basket, and that was the final margin in a 52-50 loss on Tuesday night at home.

A bucket by sophomore forward Cassandra Fibbe (18 points) with just under two minutes left put the Generals on top by one, at 50-49.

But the Lynnfield Pioneers scored a three-pointer with a minute left to take a two-point lead, and played tough defense under the basket to deny the Generals an equalizer as time expired.

"I don't think we played up to our potential tonight," said Generals Head Coach Bill Burridge. "Take nothing away from Lynnfield, they played a solid game. But I think we're capable of playing much better than this."

Burridge, who was head coach of the girls team for 14 years and took over the team again this year after a five-year hiatus, said the game was marred by the type of mistakes made by a young team.

With just two seniors on the squad - captains Sarah Vivenzio (eight points on Tuesday)  and Dorothy Zachariadis (six points)--there's a lot of room for growth from the younger players.

Freshman guard Haley Willis stated her case Tuesday with 11 points, including two second-half three-pointers.

"It's the first game of the season, so it's the type of thing where we'll just have to get better tomorrow," Burridge said.
