Hamilton Native Taken at No. 11 in NBA Draft

Michael Carter-Williams played his freshman year at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School.

Michael Carter-Williams of Hamilton was selected as the No. 11 pick in Thursday night’s NBA draft.

He was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers during the event at Barclays Center, the new home of the Brooklyn Nets, and broadcast on ESPN. His entire family is in New York for the draft, according to a report by the Syracuse Orange.

Carter-Williams, 21, is a 6-foot, 6-inch, 185-pound point guard who played his freshman year at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School and later transferred to St. Andrew’s School in Rhode Island.

He decided in March he would enter the draft and go pro after his sophomore year.

Heading into the draft, Carter-Williams was described as “one of the more intriguing prospects in an unpredictable draft” by the New York Post.

Carter-Williams in the latest in a long chain of top NBA draft picks from Syracuse, including Dion Waiters, who was taken at No. 4 in last year’s draft.

Carter-Williams, a Celtics fan, was scooped up long before the Celtics’ first round pick at No. 24.

Before Thursday night’s draft, Carter-Williams said at a press conference at the Westin Hotel in New York along with 12 other potential lottery picks on Wednesday that he was not sure he could sleep the night before the draft, an experience he said he was enjoying.

The Orange and Carter-Williams lost in the Final Four of this year’s March Madness tournament and he was later named an honorable mention All-American.
