Boys' Lacrosse Hangs on to Defeat Norwell

Hamilton-Wenham nipped the Clippers Thursday morning at Gordon College, 11-10, to improve to 3-2 on the season.

The boy’s lacrosse team held on for dear life and beat Norwell 11-10 Thursday morning at .

The Generals held an 11-8 lead when starting goaltender Luke Drieze was sent to the sidelines with a slashing penalty, replaced by back-up Nick Neff with 1:31 to play in the game.

The Clippers pulled out all the stops to try and tie things up on Neff, scoring twice on four shots, the last goal coming with 3.5 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.

Hamilton-Wenham (3-2) trailed only once, when Norwell’s Tom O’Toole scored the first of his four goals at 8:26 of the first. O’Toole was matched by Hamilton-Wenham's Eliott Burr who buried four goals of his own during the game. Spencer Bergholtz chipped in with two goals for the Generals.

The Generals never trailed after Burr’s second of the game put Hamilton-Wenham up 2-1 with 5:44 to go in the first quarter.

Hamilton-Wenham led 4-3 after one, 8-6 at the half, 9-7 after three and eeked out a 11-10 win.

Norwell was outshot 26-18, with the Generals getting single goals from Tucker White, Jake Stokes, Tad Decatur and Matt Putur. Trevor Lyons and Decatur chipped in with assists.

“We schedule teams like Norwell for a reason,” coach Jim LaSelva said after the game. “They’ve got a good program, they made it to the state championship game last season, they’re a good test for us.”

The team from the South Shore League refused to go away and pressured the home team for most of the game. O’Toole tied the game at 3-3 with 2:38 to play in the first, but Burr scored 28 seconds later and the Generals never surrendered the lead again.

The teams scored 14 goals between them in the first half, putting more emphasis on defense in the second half. Norwell actually outscored the home team 4-3 in the second half.

The nicest goal of the game started in the Hamilton-Wenham defensive end midway through the second quarter. Jimmy Brao put a shoulder into Clipper Tyler Price, knocking the ball loose. Decatur scooped it up and raced down the left side of the field before dishing a pass in front to Bergholtz, who whipped a shot by Norwell’s Craig Freehill.

Hamilton-Wenham came into the game at 2-2, with wins over and , and losses to and .

“Our defense is one of our strong points,” LaSelva said. “The defense really held it together today for us when we needed them to.”
