School's New Driveway, Parking Lot On Track for Opening Day

Work continues to expand the parking at Winthrop Elementary School.

The new parking lot in front of Winthrop Elementary School will be ready for the start of school.

According to Dave Hanlon, Hamilton’s permanent part-time Department of Public Works director, workers from both towns are getting the area ready for the final pave job.

The project received approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals earlier this month and “we jumped on it immediately,” Hanlon said.

The preparation work for the final paving is being done by workers from the DPWs from both towns. Hamilton is in charge of the new parking area and Wenham is working along the driveway in front of the school.

“You want to make sure each (town) has a specific job so we can meet our deadlines,” Hanlon said.

When done, about 30 new parking spaces will be added. The parking areas were designed so that all the existing trees would remain, Hanlon said.

The parking area will be prepared “at-grade” before Murray Reclamation works to prepare the existing paved areas for new pavement and Bitcom lays new pavement on the entire area.

“We’ll be ready for the start of school,” Hanlon said.

The project cost about $100,000 but will be about $30,000 less than it would be otherwise because of the preparation work by the DPWs rather than putting it out to bid.
