won the 2011 High School Quiz Show State Championship, defeating Mt. Greylock Regional High School in the finals that aired on WGBH channel 2 on Sunday by a score of 870-610.
High School Quiz Show - hosted by Lynnfield resident Billy Costa - showcases students from across Massachusetts and celebrates academic achievement.
Hamilton-Wenham earned a spot in the championship by advancing through the 16-team tournament-style competition for schools in eastern Massachusetts. Mt. Greylock represented the western part of the state, qualifying for the Championship through its participation on the long-running academic game program, As Schools Match Wits, a co-production of WGBH sister station WGBY and Westfield State University.
The Emmy-Award winning Quiz Show kicked off last October . More than 70 public high schools in Eastern Massachusetts competed in the qualifying round, with 16 advancing to the televised tournament. The second season, which premiered on Feb. 13, featured four rounds of questions based on topics ranging from history to literature to current events. Celebrities including Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis, actress Phylicia Rashad, news anchor Katie Couric and Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown all participated by delivering video questions to students.
This was the first High School Quiz Show State Championship win for the East. Last year, Longmeadow High School from western Massachusetts became the first-ever school to win the show’s State Championship finals.
