A roundup of students from Hamilton and Wenham who graduated from a college or university this spring.

The following local students earned college degrees this spring:

Hannah Staats Graduates from Grove City College

Grove City, Penn. - Hannah Staats graduated from Grove City College on May 19. Staats earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. She is a 2008 high school graduate who was homeschooled and is the daughter of Laura and Stephen Staats from Wenham.

A senior class of 576 students earned degrees during commencement exercises. Delivering this year's commencement address was economist and author Dr. Walter Williams.

Deborah Tam Graduates from Messiah College

Grantham, Penn. - Hamilton resident Deborah Tam was one of 642 students to graduate from Messiah College on May 12 during the College's annual commencement.

Tam graduated with a degree in communication.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,900 undergraduate and graduate students.

Julia Croyle of Wenham Awarded Degree at St. Lawrence University Commencement

Canton, N.Y. - Julia W. Croyle, of Wenham, was among the 584 students awarded a degree at St. Lawrence University's Commencement ceremony held May 20 on campus in Canton, N. Y.

Croyle was awarded a degree in environmental studies, with a minor in Francophone studies. Croyle graduated from . Croyle was presented with the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alida Martin Scholarship at Moving-Up Day ceremonies held April 28. Kappa Kappa Gamma Alida Martin Scholarship is awarded to a woman demonstrating academic success as well as involvement and leadership in the campus community.

Moving-Up Day celebrates student achievements in academics and co-curricular activities. It is a campus tradition dating from 1869, when it began as "Tree Holiday," to add trees to the campus landscape.

The Commencement speakers were Garry Trudeau, creator of comic strip Doonesbury and Mary DiSanto-Rose, associate professor of dance at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Both received honorary degrees at the ceremony.

Local Students Graduate from Bowdoin College

Brunswick, Maine - Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine held its 207th Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 26.

Emily French of Wenham graduated, majoring in French and History. Jeffrey Goodrich, of Hamilton, graduated, majoring in Economics.

Bachelor of arts degrees were awarded to 451 students from 40 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and 15 foreign countries.

Louis Ryan Hughes is a Graduate of Colgate University

Hamilton, N.Y. - Louis Ryan Hughes, from Wenham, graduated recently with a B.A. in Economics from Colgate University.

Hughes was one of 661 students to graduate with the Class of 2012, representing a graduation rate of 89.7 percent, which is among the highest in the nation.

Mark H. Murphy '77, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, delivered an inspiring keynote address.

Providence College Awards Undergraduate Degree to Elizabeth Richardson

Providence, R.I. - Elizabeth Richardson, a resident of Hamilton, was among over 900 students from Providence College who received undergraduate degrees during the College's 94th commencement exercises held on Sunday, May 20. Richardson received a bachelor's degree in Health Policy and Management.

Viola Davis, who received an honorary doctorate in fine arts, delivered the Commencement address. Davis is a native of Rhode Island and a critically actress of film, television and theater. She won the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Award for "Best Actress" and was a nominee in the same category for an Academy Award for her portrayal of 'Aibileen Clark' in the award-winning film, "The Help."

2012 UMass Dartmouth Undergraduate Commencement May 27

North Dartmouth - The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth undergraduate commencement was on May 27. An estimated 1,573 graduates received degrees.

Corey Tucker of Hamilton earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance. Julie Doughty of Wenham earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science – Clinical. Samantha Kinsman of Wenham earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/History, Magna Cum Laude

Roxana Saberi, an award-winning author, journalist, and human rights advocate who was jailed by the Iranian regime in 2009, delivered the 112th Commencement address.

Four other distinguished individuals, all PC alumni, received honorary degrees from the College. They are Dr. Charles J. Goetz '61, Catherine "Cammi" Granato '93, Dr. Paul A. Kearney, Jr. '75, and Deacon Patrick Moynihan '99G.

Local residents earn Connecticut College degrees

New London, Conn. - Two local residents were awarded Bachelor of Arts degrees from at the 94th commencement ceremony on May 20.

Lucy Frye of Wenham majored in architectural studies and art history. Joanna Smith of Hamilton majored in religious studies.

Keynote speaker, Louis B. Susman, the U.S. ambassador to the Court of St. James in London and father of Sally Susman, a 1984 graduate, urged the 437 members of Connecticut College's Class of 2012 to leverage their technological savvy to make their mark on the world.

Fields and Miller Earn Degrees from the University of Vermont

Burlington, Vt. - Julia G. Fields of Hamilton received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology within the College of Arts and Sciences during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont. Amanda B. Miller of Hamilton received a Doctor of Medicine degree.

The university conferred degrees this year on an estimated 3,202 graduates, including 2,552 bachelor's, 429 master's, 94 doctoral and 114 M.D. degree recipients, in addition to 13 post-baccalaureate certificates. Among degree recipients were students from 39 states and 22 countries.

Elizabeth Froeber has graduated from Wheaton College

Norton - Elizabeth Froeber of Hamilton has graduated magna cum laude from Wheaton College in Norton on Saturday, May 19, with a degree in Theatre and Dance Studies.

Froeber, a member of the Class of 2012, also earned Dean's List honors for the spring 2012 semester. To earn Dean's List honors, a student must complete at least three graded courses and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Janet Robinson, the former president and CEO of The New York Times Co., addressed the 404-member Class of 2012 during Wheaton's 177th Commencement, reminding the graduates that they are the authors of their own destiny.

Skidmore College Celebrates 101st Commencement May 19

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. -- Skidmore's Class of 2012, totaling 627 baccalaureate candidates, participated in the College's 101st Commencement on Saturday, May 19, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Vasiliki Manginis of Wenham received a B.A. degree Cum Laude.

Grace Burton, associate professor of Spanish, was chosen by the graduates to deliver the commencement remarks. A Skidmore faculty member since 1987, she was the recipient this year of the college's Ralph Ciancio Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Natalie Alaina Watson of South Hamilton graduates from Saint Michael's College

Colchester, Vt. - Natalie Alaina Watson, daughter of William Watson of Hamilton, graduated from Saint Michael's College with a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude degree in Elementary Education and American Studies at the college's 105th commencement exercises held on the college campus May 14.

Watson also received the Community Service award, presented to students who involve themselves with distinction in the college community and the local community.

In presenting the award, Senior Class President Megan D. Flynn highlighted Watson's dedication to a youth mentoring program called DREAM through the college's volunteer service organization, MOVE (Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts). "She has taken a large leadership role in the program and is committed to her mentee, even when she was abroad in Australia," Flynn said, specifically noting the creative ideas that Watson continually brought to the program.

Some 478 students received bachelor's degrees and another 65 received master's degrees at the commencement exercises held in the SMC Ross Sports Center.

Laura DeBlock Graduates from Bryant University

Smithfield, R.I. - Bryant University held its 149th Commencement on Saturday, May 19. Among the graduates was Laura DeBlock of Wenham, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology, cum laude.

University of New Hampshire Announces May 2012 Graduates

Durham, N.H. - The following students graduated from the University of New Hampshire during the Commencement Ceremony held Saturday, May 19 in Durham, N.H.

Jesse McElvain of Hamilton earned a B.A. degree in Psychology. John Matook of Hamilton earned a B.S. degree in Environmental Horticulture and Lindsey Coleman of Wenham earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration –Marketing.

Roland Bradshaw of Hamilton Graduates from Champlain College

Burlington, Vt. - Roland Bradshaw of Hamilton recently graduated from Champlain College. Bradshaw received a B.S. degree in Business with a possible specialization and/or minor.

Champlain College's 134th Commencement took place at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington on Saturday, May 5. In all, 451 undergraduates and 66 graduate students earned their degrees.

Dublin scholar, Dr. Patrick Masterson delivered the Commencement address to degree candidates. Andrea Rogers, founder and former director of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, spoke in honor of the three honorary degrees that were conferred.

Elizabeth Hartley Graduates from Flagler College

St. Augustine, Fla. - Elizabeth Hartley of Hamilton graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Flagler College. Hartley was one of approximately 386 Flagler seniors at the spring commencement ceremony held April 21 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Fla.
