Generals Tennis Teams Continue Winning Ways

Both the boys' and girls' tennis team continue their winning ways in the postseason tournament, with the girls' team playing next on Tuesday and the boys' on Wednesday.

Both the boys’ and girls’ tennis team at are headed to the next round of the postseason tournament.

The boys team, ranked No. 1 in the Div. 3 North sectional brackets, defeated No. 9-ranked 4-1 on Monday afternoon inside at Bass River Tennis Club in Beverly. The match was moved inside because of the rain.

At No. 1 singles, Stuart Rowe won 6-0 in the first set and Stoneham defaulted on the second set since the match was the final one on the court and Stoneham had its prom on Monday night.

Other winners for the Generals (13-2) included the No. 1 doubles team of Joe Merrill and Ryan Richard, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 with 7-5 in the tiebreaker. The No. 2 doubles team of Joe Love and Jacob Rendall won 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Hamilton-Wenham's Brian Rodgers lost 2-6, 6-7.

"We were sluggish today," coach Joe Maher said afterward, noting the seniors were coming of and . "Stoneham is a good club and pushed us hard."

The win moves the Generals to the sectional semifinals to face – a frequent and familiar post-season rival in recent years for Hamilton-Wenham.

The match is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at .

The Generals beat Weston in the the Norths sectional finals in 2009 and in 2010 lost to Weston, again in the North finals. In 2009 the Generals went on to win the state title and in 2010 Weston went on to win the state title. Last year the two teams did not meet - , who went on to face Weston.

“Last year they were a powerhouse, from top to bottom,” Maher said. This year, Weston is strong but not-unbeatable, he said.

The No. 6-ranked girls' tennis team also defeated Stoneham (9-8), also at Bass River Tennis Club, 4-1 on Saturday.

Wins came across the board in singles, from Charlotte Horton, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, No. 2 Caroline Gribbell 6-0, 6-1 and No. 3 Marie Baratto 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. The No. 2 doubles team of Carson Smiley and Katie Domoracki won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The team (10-5) now takes on No. 3-ranked Ipswich (10-4) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Ipswich in the Div. 3 North quarterfinals.
