College Bowl Team Will Appear on 'GBH to Defend 'Quiz Show' Title

The Hamilton-Wenham College Bowl team won last year's High School Quiz Show competition and has been named one of the 16 teams that will again appear on the televised show this winter.

The College Bowl team will get a chance to defend its on television in the coming months.

WGBH-TV announced Monday that the high school team – and 15 other eastern Massachusetts high school teams – will appear on the television show that begins airing on Feb. 12.

The Hamilton-Wenham team emerged where 91 teams each took an identical 100-question oral quiz at WGBH studios.

It will be the third year of the Emmy-Award show, which is hosted by North Shore resident Billy Costa.

Other area teams that qualified include Beverly High School and Rockport High School.

Last year, Hamilton-Wenham , 295-210. In the finals, the team beat Arlington 520-365.

From there, Hamilton-Wenham went on to face Mt. Greylock Regional High School, the winner of “As Schools Match Wits,” a co-production of WGBH sister station WGBY and Westfield State University. 870-610, to capture the State Championship.

The half hour long show features four rounds: toss-up, where each correct answer earns 10 points, but teams aren't penalized for incorrect answers; head-to-head, pitting one player from each team against each other for 90 seconds, with each correct and incorrect answer worth 10 points; categories, featuring six categories of five questions of increasing value; and the 90-second lightning round, with each correct and incorrect answer worth 20 points.
