College Bowl Team Advances on 'Quiz Show,' Defeats Sharon for Second Time in 2 Years

The high school College Bowl team won its first round match and moves on to face Brookline in a match that will air in April.

Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School defeated Sharon High School, 530-195, in a "High School Quiz Show" first-round match, which aired on WGBH-TV on Sunday night.

It was the first appearance on the show in 2012 for the Generals’ College Bowl team after winning the show’s championship in 2011.

The Hamilton-Wenham team returns to the air to face Brookline in an episode that will air on April 8 at 6 p.m. The state championship episode of the Emmy-Award winning fast-paced academic game show airs May 20.

Sunday night's episode was a rematch of last season's Eastern Mass. semi-finals, which Hamilton-Wenham won, 295-210.

The Generals fell behind early, trailing 180-120 after the opening toss-up round, where each correct answer earns 10 points, but teams aren't penalized for incorrect answers.

But, Hamilton-Wenham took a 200-180 lead after the head-to-head, which pit one player from each team against each other for 90 seconds, with each correct and incorrect answer worth 10 points. Chris Anderson went to the podium to face Siddharth Singh of Sharon.

Hamilton-Wenham expanded its lead to 450-235 during the categories round, featuring six categories of five questions of increasing value: The Fab Four, Fashion Statement, What the Dickens!, Ship Shape, The Cold War and Galaxy Quest.

The contest ended with a 90-second lightning round, with each correct and incorrect answer worth 20 points.

Hamilton-Wenham’s on-air team is made up of seniors Anderson, Ian MacLean and Connor Schmidt and junior Siobhan McDonough. The are also two alternates, Taylor MacDonald and Patrick Xu and the team is coached by teacher Vincent Bucci.

Sharon's on-air team included junior Hari Anbarasu and sophomores Peter Riley, Singh and Clara Mao.

This season's 16 schools scored the highest among 78 schools taking a 100-question oral quiz at WGBH's Brighton studios on Oct. 30.
